Read the article

I know these legislators in our state flip flop back in forth to get elected. It’s ridiculous that these people continue to raise taxes on people and not cut out the excess spending. The lobbyists control these idiots and they only care about getting re-elected. Luckily, a lot of these idiots are term limited. At some point this has to change. We are stuck in a legislative hellhole due to this annual debacle.

Everyone knows TOPS needs to be changed but they won’t do it. They can’t even raise the ACT score one measely point. They can’t allow people to receive more home health like they old people want because the nursing home lobby is so strong. Not to mention, there is at least one if not two legislators who own nursing homes. They get paid even if all their beds are empty.

That’s two big items that can be reduced and made more efficient. We would get more bang for our buck.

Except when you’re dealing with the black caucus or some big government program it is. So basically the House tries to hold true to its values as republicans and the senate doesn’t care because they are really democrats. The best thing that can happen is Alario getting out of that chamber.

It only seems that way. Really the Senate is controlled by Alario, who is working with the Governor, who happens to be a Democrat.

I left that sorry Democratic state 20 years ago, and have not been one bit sorry. It is Mississippi, but with oil, and Mississippi at lest knows how to run gambling. Don't get me wrong, I long for the friends and family I left behind, but as a political site, it stinks.

Funny, for 8 years Jindal ran the State, into the ground :double bird: We are the suckers for getting caught up in the D vs R while they party during their special sessions

Where you're confused is that there is almost no distinction between Republicans and Democrats.

No, neither JBE or Bobby Jindal have served the State of Louisiana properly. BOTH failed.

Jindal was too smart. JBE isn't smart enough. Neither gives a rat's arse about the people of the State.

In a Republican-dominated Senate (on paper), there is no reason for two MAJOR committees - Revenue and Fiscal Affairs and Judiciary B - to be chaired by and be majority Democrat (on paper).

What the frick good is a majority if you turn power of the majority on important issues? Everyone knows Alario permits it so he can have a political out for bills he doesn’t like - send them to the D’s to die.

frick Alario and our State Senate. I want a Governor who will break the opposition if necessary to do what’s best for the state, starting with outing the good ole boy power brokers.

It's pathetic. The bottom tier of TOPS (2.5 GPA, 20 on the ACT) is responsible for about half the entire program's total cost. Of this tier ~70% do not go a second year. That's ~$105M just pissed away each year.

One idea (which I've championed in the past) is to just cut that tier out completely due to the low qualifications and high drop-out rate. The ROI on this is so blatantly bad that only politicians looking to buy votes could support keeping it.

Another idea is to require those that drop out for longer than 6 months to repay the TOPS money. I like this idea as well, but again we see hardly any movement toward this from the legislature. Instead they would rather fund a failing part of the program than risk losing votes.

If such an obvious fix is so difficult to accomplish, it just makes sense that they can't manage to balance a budget without a figurative gun to their heads.

I go to almost every rev and fisc and ways and means hearing, and it is nearly impossible to distinguish party based on policy.

Republicans will kill bills which cut spending that Democrats will give favorable passage. In the 17 fiscal session I saw the supposedly conservative John Schroder defer bill after bill which cut various incentive programs, even ones brought forward by fellow Republicans.

Yet Republicans hold large majorities in both
The state Senate and House.

But they're all Democrats, right?

The time has come to RETIRE John Alario. He's been in the legislature since 1972.....46 years. That's enough time for him t steal enough and get a multi use center in Marrero named after him

No one runs against Alario. And yes, Alario is really a Democrat who switched parties years ago for political reasons. He was basically Edwin Edwards’ right hand man. Nothing Republican about that guy.

I agree.

Unless one is pocketing a good living directly from the graft, incoherence and incompetence of La. state govt, it is best to move to Texas. Sooner the better, certainly do it while you're young.
