Louisiana budget revenues are projected to take a $1 billion hit as the coronavirus hammers the state's businesses and workers, according to economists who took their first stab at forecasting the financial toll Monday. The Revenue Estimating Conference, a panel that decides how much money the state has to spend on things like colleges, K-12 schools, health care and a host of other state services, voted to adopt a revenue forecast that is about $1 billion lower than the previous forecast.

I’m sure Edwards will ask for a bailout like other democrat governors.

It might be painful in the short term but at least this state has a strong underlying economy fueled by various industrial sectors. I'm grateful for the forward thinking leadership we've blessed with who were able to attract those industries to this state.

The new Corona Cliff

LSU football must be cancelled, Granny kicked out of the nursing home, schools closed, hospitals closed, prisons emptied, rapists sent directly to your house unless John Bel gets his Billion Dollar Tax Hike!!

I have said this for the last few months, JBE will have to put his big boy pants on and finally cut something. Easy to pick on his predecessor for cutting and using one time funds to fill holes when you get the Leg to pass “temporary taxes”. He hasn’t reformed any of the tax basis , he increased spending the last fours years across the board and also increased the state government footprint by hiring more staff at every agency. Can’t do it this year.

Sure, in the form of higher taxes for the state of Louisiana.

Asking people to accept higher taxes might have worked if he hadn’t Chicken Little’d himself repeatedly by threatening by LSU football and throwing granny out of the nursing home.

Maybe we should’ve used the $100million on something else than a kickback for some make shift hospital? Where are the list of contractors that built it? Jayce knows

Many government workers are being paid to stay at home right now. Has anyone's services been affected ? How about cutting Louisiana government in HALF for starters? Letting people retire on government pensions at age 50 or so is ridiculous. Government workers should work until they are 70 years old before they can retire with full benefits, just like the SS people have to.

Good summation. Very good.
He generated a crisis which allowed him to raise taxes when he took office. He tried to keep most of those taxes in place but the legislature cut them back somewhat, but he still got his surplus to play with. He increased the budget and planned on increasing it even more. It appears he too will find himself in the ditch, but the Feds might bail him out. If not he’d going to have two options; more taxes if cutting the budget.

I feel bad for LA folks as I still have family down there, but MAN. You guys constantly bitch giving tax breaks to any sector not O&G, then go full shocked-pikachu face when the budget plunges with the price of oil.

Don't bath in oil then be surprised you're burning when it gets hot.

EDIT: for everyone blaming JBE not cutting spending and raising taxes, where you upset when Jindal sucked the federal Katrina money dry giving O&G $200 million in cash?

That's only $500 per resident. Make everyone cut a check and let's move on.

I’d rather give him the finger and tell him to cut the sweetheart deal for some legislator’s nephew Jim Bob.
