Louisiana residents 18 and older will soon be allowed to carry concealed handguns without a permit after legislation received final passage from lawmakers on Wednesday.

The bill, passed by the state House and Senate, will now head to Gov. Jeff Landry's desk for his signature. If signed, the law would go into effect on July 4.

I'm glad that this "tax" on a constitutional right is going away. Just need Landry to sign it into law now. We should have been one of the first states to do this in the south, not one of the last.

My understanding is that you would still need a permit for reciprocity agreements with other states to apply...unless you were in another state that also had legal carry without a permit.

Reciprocity agreements were that the states would recognize each other's permits. No permit = no reciprocity.

Not really sure it’s a net positive

Cops cannot search people for carrying without a permit now.
Over 2,500 guns were apprehended last year in New Orleans after cops stopped suspects for carrying without permit.

That can’t happen now.

Maybe do more gum shoe detective work and less proactive sweeps.

Suppose my question was more for resident only carry vs non-resident carry. I should have been more clear.

But it looks like non-resident carry is more the norm here.

Good. I’d bet the vast, vast majority were confiscated in addition to other crimes. If it was ONLY because of carrying without a permit, then that is absolute bullshite.

I’m not about to start carrying the water of cops stopping “suspects” (racial profiling) people…then turn around and say “look at these guns we got off the streets” without any other crime than those individuals expressing their 2nd amendment rights.

Every state that has constitutional carry offers a $5-$50 permit still for out of state reciprocity. You will just pay like $25 for the permit, without taking any class

I would wager most of those were criminals who aren't legally able to possess firearms anyway. This law doesn't change that.

Also, gun charges are the most pled out charges in existence (up to 70% of them in some places).
