This presser is a disaster. Trump looks like a dumb arse at the moment.

This is something for him to maybe bring up months from now but not today and not in this presser. WTF is his problem?

I think this is by far his lowest moment. Holy hell...

Why would a chopper be allowed to fly across an approach flight path when a jet was landing???

What makes you think they were allowed to do that? It wasn't allowed and they weren't suppose to be there.

That may be true but it's not funny. Not now, not in this press conference.

Trump's people have got to be exploding with anger behind the scenes right now because this is a political disaster for him. I am speechless that he just keeps going.

It could not have come from behind, or even the side. The helicopter is just not fast enough to keep up with a plane like that, which probably has an approach speed of 180 knots. It had to have come from the front quarter.

The approach speed of a CRJ700 is around 135-140kts. The Blackhawk was probably traveling about that speed as well, maybe a bit slower. The CRJ is in the process of landing, literally 3-4 seconds. The pilot in control is focused on the runway and the runway only, looking for traffic that may be encouring the runway he is landing on. The American crew did everything correctly.

So did the pilot really not see the aircraft? Looking at the fight/approach radars, those were the only two aircraft in that area.

He could have seen a cell tower light or anything. That Blackhawk pilot on X, who was reposted in this thread, said it best, There is a lot happening and a hell of a lot of lights in a big city. And it’s harder than most people probably realize to see other aircraft. Sometimes on beautiful clear days I’ve been told that I had traffic 500 feet below me, heading right toward me two miles out, and I scrutinized the area up ahead and never saw it until it was about half a mile from me.

The beginning of his speech was perfect, then he had to make it political. Why does he have to go there? Plenty of time to do this over the next few months not the morning after, while the bodies are still strapped in their seats.

You're right, its not funny but Trump calling out the previous administration is likely a response to some in the media already pinning some of the blame for the accident on Trump's executive orders.

I couldn't agree more. This is a horrendous look for Trump and he deserves every bit of criticism that he's going to get from both voters and the media (left wing and right wing).

If this was Biden saying this - or Kamala - this board would be besides itself right now.

That’s false. You are in ground effect with 4 seconds to touchdown.

I reiterate that I don’t blame them for something that probably half the flight crews would also have done, but technically I think this is false. I’m interested in hearing from actual airline pilots.

I agree. Thought it was important to share as it addressed so many things discussed in this thread.

I stand corrected, probably more like 10 seconds, still, the pilot in command is focused solely on the runway in front of him.

It's so sad that everyone is confirmed dead. I had a feeling when they said that area of the Potomac was 7 ft deep.

You actually thought someone was going to survive that huge explosion in the air?

Most of the Potomac is shallow around DC.

Maybe, just maybe, Trump has access to info we all don't, and maybe he knows something you don't. And maybe what he knows, might suggest that this tragedy was preventable?

People definitely survived the explosion that was mostly outside of the aircrafts. It was hitting the water that killed most people.

Most people survived the initial explosions during the TWA crash and Lockerbie bombing.

The CRJ was in a wing high, left turn for most of that - as they transitioned from RWY 1 to RWY 33.

Extremely unlikely they ever saw the helicopter, and even more unlikely - virtually impossible - for them to have executed an evasive maneuver to avoid a collision while in that configuration & airspeed. Gear down, flaps fully deployed, engines spooled way down.
