The Dems got caught fixing their primary and argued in court that they pick their own candidate and that the primaries don’t count, IIRC.
Keep in mind how they ratfricked the Iowa caucuses in 2020 in order to blunt any momentum for Bernie or Buttplug while they tried to save Biden’s arse. He still didn’t perform in NH and was only saved in South Carolina because Clyburn cut a deal.
Keep in mind that Biden is probably the first major candidate in a huge number of cycles to win neither Iowa nor New Hampshire yet got the nomination anyway. Only other one I can think of is Bill Clinton and he was in a dogfight the whole way with Tsongas and Moonbeam in 1992.

Sadly Republican party is heading that way too with changes to give the plurality winners all the delegates and many states are now shifting the lion's share of the delegates to the caucus vs the primary.
It's getting to the point where it's almost meaningless to vote in a primary in some states.

RFK is talking to the Libertarians about running on that ticket for that specific reason.
The Dems can ratfrick their own primaries.
It requires help from judges to pull existing parties with ballot placement like the Libertarian party from the ballot, as those organizations have the machine in place to get signatures and do everything as opposed to someone like Kanye trying to do it themself.
