re: libertarians need to get over their “principled” positions until the electorate is fixed

A true libertarian wouldn’t even entertain the thought of voting for a democrat. I like Trump. I’d vote for him again if I could. That said, Trump and these republicans we currently have need to recognize our only way out of a lot of these problems is to cut spending. Debt = chains

If you want my vote, then put conservatives in office.
Don't cry otherwise.

Always.

Your objection is you think Ron Desantis is a Libertarian?! He isn’t. Cutting the budget isn’t a libertarian idea. The problem with libertarians is they are essentially Democrats hiding behind another label because deep down they know admitting you support Leftist policies is an embarrassment. So, we are left with a bunch of anti Trumpers spouting their “above the fray” nonsense and “both sides” defense
At the federal level conservatives and libertarians generally have the same goals.

quote:Exactly! We need to keep the establishment in power so they will eventually get around to reducing the size and scope of government. Surely, they will do it if we keep re-electing them, give them more power, and let them spend more. Eventually, they will get around to fixing it. Winning!
Small “l” libertarian ideas simply are not going to win elections. And the name of the game in politics is winning elections and wielding power. You can sit on the sidelines and wring your hands, but it doesn’t do any good when the Marxist left is running roughshod over this country

Keep that lie up. Sooner or later it will become the truth. Classic Democrat tactic. Not surprised MAGA, with a lifelong Dem leading it, would use it.

Who? When?
Since the 1920s. Have you ever heard of Calvin Coolidge?
Then in the 30's and 40's they opposed FDR and his new deal spending.
In the 90s they actually forced democrats to balance the budget.
There has been a big government part of the republican party, but they aren't conservatives. Back in the day they were Rockefeller republicans, then they were replaced by neocons in the 70s and 80s.
But conservatives have always been for limited government, spending and so on.

But like I said, it's an Idea. And much like Communism, it will never work because of, for the lack of a better way to say it, human greed and the need for power. Until we can throw off those shackles, open borders is a moronic idea that will not work and a strong border is a necessity to maintain our society.
Libertarianism just like socialism needs humans to behave like humans have never behaved for any prolonged length of time. I will say though that being as libertarian as possible while maintaining some level of common sense is beneficial to all.

Fair enough. I'm conflating conservatism with those who claim to be conservatives.
Wild hat we have to go back a hundred years to get an example of an actual conservative prez.

Yeah, if you go by what republicans do, it's all big government uni-party crap.
That's why I rarely vote for them. But if/when they put up conservatives I vote for them.

Spoken like someone who doesn't appreciate their own culture or understand the problems that come with a bunch of foreigners refusing to assimilate.
Not everything is about money. We are not an economic zone. Even with no welfare at all, we still need borders to protect our identity.
This doesn't seem to be a concern for many Americans anymore.
And now you even have conservatives saying Islam isn't that bad. You have conservatives or libertarians running spin for a muslim who says it's his duty to implement sharia law in America.
Culture matters more than economics. I don't care how talented and successful Punjab is if he still shits on the beach.
I would rather pay more to live in a country that looks like America, acts like America, and hires Americans over foreigners.

I believe his point is that if people weren't being given welfare when they come here there wouldn't be a nice for strict borders because they only reason they would come would be for freedom and to work/contribute to society.
Which would be nice.
But we are no where near that point so for now we need closed borders.

Libertarians are actually liberals in sheeps clothing. The etymology of the word clearly demonstrates this
Also, the guys on here claiming to be libertarians also have admitting to voting for either Ralph Nader, the Clintons, Perot, Obama, Bernie, Kamala, Biden, JBE, Mary Landrieu, etc
You simply dont go from that vote to MAGA. They are just trying to weaken the movement by acting like whiny bitches
quote:
Libertarianism has been broadly shaped by liberal ideas. Libertarians advocate the principles of equality before the law and the protection of civil rights. They generally support individual liberty and oppose authority, state power, and nationalism
The use of the term libertarian to describe a new set of political positions has been traced to a letter French communist Joseph Déjacque wrote to Pierre-Joseph Proudhon in 1857.Déjacque also used the term for his anarchist publication Le Libertaire, Sébastien Faure, another French communist, began publishing a new Le Libertaire in the mid-1890s. Libertarianism has frequently been used to refer to anarchism and socialism

Libertarians are often naive about human nature. Show Americans a starving Mexican child living in Los Angeles, and many will quickly abandon your law and call for government intervention to help.
The deeper problem with most political philosophies is that they fail to account for actual human nature. Communism never works for the same reason. Even when you sincerely believe society should operate a certain way, you sometimes have to compromise those philosophical ideals because you know people will abuse them.
Take religious freedom in a historically Christian society it makes perfect sense in theory. But once you have open borders and large-scale Muslim immigration, the picture changes. If Islamic beliefs ever become the majority, those same people who benefited from religious freedom are likely to persecute the Infidels that provided their past freedoms. Christian societies should prevent a scenario like this now for practical reasons while they have the numbers but they won’t because people are naive and focused on principles rather than survival.

You don’t have an example of a libertarian doing anything in American politics. What’s your point on the conservative example being “old”?
