As we have seen over the last three weeks, Russian refineries are back on the menu and Ukraine is eating every night. Delay and obfuscation are the strong suite in Russia's diplomacy game. They know no other strategy. But now, the longer Putin delays the more refineries he loses.
Tick Tock MF.
So this is the thing thats finally going to break Russia, and Ukraine could have been doing it the entire time (and tried this exact tactic before, which didn't work then).
If something they have been capable of for a while is going to work and they are just now doing it, are they just stupid?

Russia did not receive any promises that military support for Ukraine would cease. However, according to the outlet, this last point is said to be acceptable to the Russians.
This point was even true during the drafting process in 2022.

Ukraine could have been doing it the entire time
In the earlier part of the war Ukraine didn't possess long distance drones nor long distance missiles which could reach refineries deep into Russia. In those days Ukraine did target refineries near enough that Ukraine's short range drones could reach the refineries.
The war's weapons have changed from the early days of the war.
I don't know what your agenda is but you apparently have the memory of a fruit fly.

They've been able to reach most Russian refineries since late 2023 to mid 2024. They more recently have been able to hit the ones in regions like Samara, sure.

Obviously.

Yes, everyone with an opinion you don't like has an agenda.
I think I've been pretty consistent in that 1) Ukraine is clearly the good guy in this conflict 2) I don't like or care about them all that much and 3) I don't think we should send them a single crumb more than we already have. Europe can handle Europe. The Russian threat is clearly overrated. They are a paper bear.

They were told not to by the Biden administration, a policy continued by Trump until about 3-4 weeks ago. Sorry, I thought everyone knew this.

[2024] The US has urged Ukraine to halt attacks on Russia’s energy infrastructure, warning that the drone strikes risk driving up global oil prices and provoking retaliation, according to three people familiar with the discussions.
The repeated warnings from Washington were delivered to senior officials at Ukraine’s state security service, the SBU, and its military intelligence directorate, known as the GUR, the people told the Financial Times.
quote:
Washington is also concerned that if Ukraine keeps hitting Russian facilities, including many that are hundreds of miles from the border, Russia could retaliate by lashing out at energy infrastructure relied on by the west.
This includes the CPC pipeline carrying oil from Kazakhstan through Russia to the global market. Western companies including ExxonMobil and Chevron use the pipeline, which Moscow briefly shut in 2022. “We do not encourage or enable attacks inside of Russia,” an NSC spokesperson said. The CIA declined to comment. In Kyiv, a spokesperson for the SBU declined to comment. Officials at GUR and Zelenskyy’s office did not respond to requests for comment.
quote:
The US objections come as Biden faces a tough re-election battle this year with petrol prices on the rise, increasing almost 15 per cent this year to around $3.50 a gallon. “Nothing terrifies a sitting American president more than a surge in pump prices during an election year,” said Bob McNally, president of consultancy Rapidan Energy and a former White House energy adviser.
US Urged Ukraine to Halt Strikes on Russian Oil Refineries.

Technologically, yes, politically and quantitatively, no.
Keep in mind NATO countries had strict red lines telling Ukraine they couldn't use their donated weapons very deep inside of Russia. The red lines Biden removed when he left office alone opened up over 240 Russian bases for attack, not counting refineries and such.
That along with the fact that Ukraine had to concentrate on the forces actually occupying the Ukraine mean that they didn't have the capabilities to strike Russia. Now, however, that they have their own home-grown drone industry they can strike whenever and wherever they please.
The polite term for what Russia is, is screwed.

It's a simple hydroskimming refinery no crackers at all. Crude unit, naphtha hydrotreater and naphtha reformer to make high octane gasoline.

Wear and tear have done more damage than the drone attacks but they have helped a little.

Luftwaffe Specialists Repaired Patriot Radar for Ukraine
German specialists have repaired the damaged radar of the Ukrainian Patriot air defense system.
Bundeswehr Major General Mike Keller, who coordinates NATO’s military support for Ukraine, said in an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that several months ago, Russian forces damaged the radar of the Ukrainian Patriot system.
According to him, the NATO mission in Wiesbaden, which coordinates assistance to Ukraine, is engaged not only in supplying weapons but also in repairing them.
In particular, the Patriot radar system was “seriously damaged”.
When it was delivered to Germany, the manufacturer said the radar was beyond repair.
However, after contacting the NATO mission in Wiesbaden, experts of the German Air Force (Luftwaffe) took up the task and managed to restore the radar’s functionality, working six days a week.
In July 2025, the radar was returned to Ukraine, and last week it was successfully used by Ukrainian forces to destroy a Russian target.

If Russia were screwed we wouldn't be talking sanctions. There would be no need. Just take our their industry and dictate terms yourself instead of tacking on more sanctions that haven't gotten Putin to the table thus far anyway.
It's very interesting to see people say Russia's O+G isn't making any money, then tell us strikes on their O+G is going to be their downfall. Maybe they are right, interesting logic though.

We're applying sanctions for the very reason President Trump has said hundreds, if not thousands, of times now
People are dying.
If we want to have any hope of stopping the killing, we have to stop the people who started it and who, no matter what anybody believes, are going to lose this war.
Furthermore, just 'taking out their industry' (I assume that's what you meant, not 'our industry') is more complex when it's the second largest industrial military complex on the planet, located in the geographically largest country on the planet - it might take a while to have a real impact.
Ukraine is doing exactly what they need to be doing right now.

We'll take it. It was responsible for 2.1% of all Russian refinery output, according to the London School of Economics analysis.
