Molin on the possibility of a new Russian offensive in the north -
quote:
In 2026, massive Ukrainian fortifications are under construction in Chernihiv and Kyiv oblasts to face the possibility of a Russian offensive.
I believe any offensive coming from Belarus is highly unlikely for 3 reasons :
Ukraine would strike Belarus if its territory is used by Russia a second time, a thing for which Minsk is absolutely not ready
Ukrainian fortifications and barbed wire start directly on the border, with now a massive line around Chernihiv (+ 2 smaller ones in front of the city and 3 closer to the border), important preparation are ongoing near Chornobyl and north-east of Zhytomyr. Ukraine is cutting large parts of forests to set up barbed wire.
There wouldn't be any surprise this time and the terrain is not on Russia's side, with mined roads, massive forests and wetlands that wouldn't allow any quick offensive. A ground offensive would take years to reach Kyiv.
Further small scale offensive actions along the Russian border are entirely possible, mainly in northern Sumy oblast and eastern Chernihiv oblast. Defensive lines are far from the border and the large forests would allow deep infiltrations behind the lines. However, for this to succeed, Russia needs thousands of men. Thus small scale infiltrations can still happen, especially the same kind as those along the border east of Hloukhiv.
But those would have barely any streategic impact, unless Russia mobilize hundreds of thousands of recruits.
