WinZip has been an effectively obsolete application since around 2009.

All OSs have built in zip functionality by default since the Windows 7 era.

The government is fricking retarded.

Hackers are using companies’ licenses without them knowing it. This causes them to always run short and have to buy more. It was happening to us.

Some companies sell their unused licenses to companies that resell at a significant discount. I have purchased MSSQL 15 cal license for $800. A new license would sell for 4K.

Yeah; can be said about each line item noted. Beyond unreasonable. I think this just points to the bigger issue of absolute bloat and feds not giving a shite.

Very common issue in corporate america, typically 5% over employee rate is common in companies that have great procedures in place to manage licenses. I would be cautious that all of these are gotchas, a lot of companies will sell you a bucket of licenses say 500-1000 licenses are X amount and if you need 1001 you go up to the next bucket, so that would be really easy for lazy journalists to make a big deal out of something that is a nothingburger.

All that being said, if corporate America is bad at this, I expect the government to be down right awful, which makes sense if they are paying for 100% more licenses than employees, that’s pretty crazy.

It’s pretty normal for licenses to get reviewed and outright canceled for everyone periodically. The ones that actually need it get their line manager to approve getting it back. The fact this wasn’t done, at minimum, bi-annually is proof that the ability to get software was entirely too simple at fed-gov. And if they were overlooking that very simple thing, what else are they overlooking?

Software licenses can get very costly.

No That's a sign of bad asset management.

The fact that it's WinZip is more troubling than the numbers. 13k employees doesn't mean they only need 13k licenses.

For an organization this size it's not unrealistic what they have here. And sometimes you buy up with plans to expand or things change and you negotiate back down.

The ss admin finding uipath having double licenses is a good example. If they continue building out automation there they'll continue to consume more and more since it's tied to workers not users there. Nothing nefarious there just more info needed

Rule #1 of this forum is everything is nefarious and must be waste. Joking but not joking at the same time.

I agree. And I can vouch for it being common in government work due to employee turnover.

But I’m curious about this reported finding because Musk also knows corporate America and manages several corporations.

Apparently the most successful entrepreneurs alive today sees this as wasteful. I’ll hear him out.

He also says he isn't right all the time and the tweets he sends out need validated later....

I do agree it should be cleaned up some though. Reductions in licensing will save us a few million potentially

You cite this quote as if it's a bad thing. I see it as just the opposite

Nope. I cite this quote because that's what he said. If he can admit he's wrong, the Loyalists should learn from that.

I love the fact that he said this and I find it funny that so many people act like it's some sort of gotcha. I have actually seen him in videos in the past well before he entered the political Arena where he was highly receptive to anybody challenging his ideas regarding a variety of subjects to include engineering on his current Space Program. That's exactly the kind of person I want addressing challenging problems
