while i agree with your overall point, for the sake of this discussion and these igits, the emancipation proclamation was a part of the civil war fought by white people

How do you know if you were born 500 years ago your views on slavery would be the same they are today? You don't!
THIS is the point i was making earlier: the tyranny of the present. the entire world thought slavery was ok. it was called the colonial period. yet, white guilt americans are calling out american ancestors for doing something that was acceptable worldwide at the time. well, if you're going to call out white people, then call out everyone who was doing it. oh and btw, some countries are STILL doing it.

but muh merican ancestors

but they could see the extension of the issue. slavery might have been the proximate cause but, states rights were absolutely the overall point being fought over - one state telling another what they could and couldn't do

More whataboutism. Most of our parents/grandparents were alive when black people were being murdered because they dared to demand equal rights.

It's hard.. because a certain demographic refuses to admit that their ancestors were traitors
here's a fun fact. If you are a black person in America today, there is almost 100% chance that you have a direct ancestor who participated in the slave trade by catching, enslaving, and selling other black Africans. Every nation in West Africa actively participated in the slave trade (white Europeans didn't go inland to catch people). Whereas the vast majority of white people in the us don't even have any ancestors who ever owned a slave.

I wish everyone on the Left would read this for the balance and perspective it brings to an issue that is still causing rifts between us.

"Left"....interested in "balance"? Nawwwtt!

There are generally two main mindsets that fuel the Black Muh Slavery narrative. One is for a grievance/street hustle given inability to do the hard work required to prosper in a competitive Capitalist Society....and the other is the pride/ego thing and a desire for payback. Probably 90% of Blacks fall prey to this fallacious and pernicious mental pitfall in varying degrees. The extraordinary character required to overcome these crippling psychoses, given the Tribalism dynamic in society, makes it truly praiseworthy for any Black that can make the 10%. Not sure I could make that cut if my skin were black.

And for the record, all humans have Tribal inclinations to varying degrees. Evolution and biology.

Yet with high profile leaders like Sowell, Elder and many others - even our own beloved BLACK Helicopter Pilot on the Board - I suspect that these truly denigrating psychoses will go away soon, once the Marxist delusion is exposed and their MSM/Academia exploitation of vulnerable Blacks becomes impotent.

Teaching the whole truth via our schools would go a long way to societal/racial harmony. Not what the Marxist want.

Moving forward the hard way.

Slavery was a part of life in Western cultures until the 1800’s. Hell...we fought a war and spilled our own blood to end it here.

But today, all of the angst against historic slavery in the US is simply used to garner power and support from a very easily convinced African American community that is looking for a scapegoat to blame for the plight of their community.

There is no interest there to look into the facts because that’s inconvenient to the cause.

You tell that to the male emperor penguins who were just looking for some action only to find out they have to 24-7 slave work in the most grueling conditions:

The male spends the dark winter incubating the egg in his brood pouch, balancing it on the tops of his feet, for 64 consecutive days until hatching.

How many countries fought a civil war that ended the practice of slavery within its borders? Name them.

I'll hang up and listen, as you won't come up with any other than the one you think is evil.

You can't just throw out a "word" that was just made up the other day, and expect to defeat an argument. Every argument or point ever made could be called a "whataboutism." It's a nonsense rebuttal, and is actually ironically itself a whataboutism.

We are all living in an era when young black men kill other black men, routinely, over drug turf and/or showing disrespect.

What, exactly, is your point? People suck. Americans suck the least, over the entire history of the species. By several orders of magnitude, BTW.

No.. it's that we were so horribly racist. Racist politicians were racist people first..

Don’t you dare point out that the only group of people who don’t actively commit slavery TODAY are white folk.

Blacks in Africa still enslave each other. Chinese treat norks who cross over as slaves. Arabs in the Middle East still commit slavery as well.

But the evil white man!

Maybe people are interested in what pertains to our country and not so much worried about the rest of the world.

We're the greatest nation in the world. We shouldn't need to compare ourselves in any way to countries that still have glaring human rights violations. We know they're morally inferior. I don't look at my personal life and judge it in reference to someone that has been in prison for 20 years.

no, there is no degree. you are either racist or you aren't. america wasn't so horribly racist and why do you keep ignoring that white people fought a war to end it?

and this is a problem i have with criticisms of trump. he gets labeled a "racist." well, how do you know he's a racist? he said something? yeah, well he's also worked with and promoted countless minorities. what about that?
