LA Times: Camping is segregated because gear is too expensive

In May, Mo Jackson was camping with a friend in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. They woke at 5 to start a fire, make breakfast and — in the midst of a pandemic — experience the peace that comes with an early morning in a secluded spot.
The beauty of that morning moved Jackson to tears. “I had the most clarifying moment. You know, I just thought, I wish everyone could feel this.”
Jackson realized that, although they could not help everyone feel more connected to nature, they could get a few more people outside by offering free camping gear. “That day I was like, OK, what can I do to get more Black people outdoors? And I thought, well, I have enough savings to get three camping kits together.”
quote:
A 2018 study by the Society of American Foresters found that between 2010 and 2014, 94.6% of visitors to national forests identified as white. People who identified as Latino made up 5.7%, and those who identified as Black made up 1.2%.
Jackson’s personal experiences bear out those numbers. They grew up camping and hiking but noticed at an early age that not many other families resembled theirs. “My dad and I would almost always be the only Black people at any camp we went to,” Jackson said.
quote:
“I think there is a lot of white guilt right now,” Jackson said, explaining why donations suddenly took off. “We’re all learning and growing; sometimes guilt is part of it too — not that we want guilt and shame, but we do want growth.”
quote:
The disparity in access to the outdoors is particularly frustrating to Harris, who pointed out that those who could most benefit from being in a rural environment have often felt excluded. “Being in nature is healing,” she said. “People who need that healing most are Black and Indigenous people, and the idea that it’s inaccessible … it’s just not right.”

I can outfit a family of 4 with everything they need to camp out for 3 days for under $1000 - EASILY - if we had to hit a strict budget, we could do it for about $650. Gear that will last years and dozens of campouts.
How much do smartphones cost? Cars? Flatscreen TVs?

The kit would include two sleeping bags, a tent and a cooler. Jackson included a Venmo account on Instagram so people could donate to the cause.

Jackson initially purchased the ready-to-go kits from REI, which cost about $300 each.
Oof!
Did they not check Walmart?

Based on all the looting, I am going to guess that not too many tents were taken.

there's a reason nobody is looting REI

I love how you can't say all black people are poor and on welfare but if you say it using 1,000 words then it's perfectly acceptable

How much of this shite do people have already in most cases?
Sleeping bags, coolers, etc are owned by a lot of people and are fine to be used in camping provided it isn’t in extreme temperatures.
And even then, who says you need to by the high end stuff as a starter when you don’t even know if you will like to do this more than once?

Identified as white? I thought you either were or weren't.

Yeah, tents and shite are real hard to get hold of. Only the super rich can get them.

Camping can be cheap as hell or as expensive as one wants.
Couple of sheets, a knife, a frying pan, fishing pole and string with a hook.
Dig worms, bait hook, haul in panfish, fry in pan, sleep between 2 sheets. Wipe arse with leaves. Pretty cheap camping.

Black people in general do not like the woods. Basically a universal "frick that shite"

Crap, you can get a used tent and sleeping bag from Goodwill, or pretty decent prices on tents and sleeping bags at Sam's.
You don't have to have a whole lot of gear to go camping and it doesn't have to be new. It's more of a "want to."

They definitely did not do their research ....

I’m convinced they want to re-enact the scene from There will be blood when Daniel is begging for blood in the church and the pastor is mocking him and slapping him as he begs for it....

So is shooting, because anti-gun policies by the left have driven up prices on guns and ammo.

Twenty black dudes at a "Camping 101 Seminar"
Trainer: "First, we take this rope and throw it over that tree limb"
Twenty black dudes at a dead sprint the frick out of there!

Ask the homeless people in California if camping in a tent is too expensive, there's tons of them camping under the freeways now.
