The most organized and competent group of parents are those who are already in the private school system and have access to administrators within the private school system who have guided those parents.
A lot of these cases are parents and grandparents who have been scraping money together to put their kids into private schools.

If a child moves, dies, transfers, whatever between November and February, the school would not receive funding for that child after the Feb MFP count

Thus, the majority of vouchers will go to families who are currently paying for private school. This is new spending.
No, this is not new spending. It's money that should have been following those children all along.

No thanks.
If you have a child that goes to a private HS in LA….just know they are going to a lower quality school than Ben Franklin.

Why should we subsidize someone who chooses to live in a shithole with no good public school option? Try living somewhere decent and you can use the public system.
Dude this is so spot on.
If you can afford private school and want to send you child there—great!
If you can’t afford private school, then you better move somewhere that has a good public school system. People act like they have no autonomy or ownership over this. If your child’s education isn’t worth moving over, then what is?

Last time I checked, Louisiana spent something like $12k per kid (including the federal dollars) for each kid educated in LA public schools.
It’s closer to $13k and it’s absolutely insane considering the quality of education and the outcomes through the bulk of the state’s public schools.

It looks like Landry got the the full amount of funding he requested for the year, to the tune of 90+ million dollars.
This is interesting, because it may cover more than just the low income applicants for next year. I'm not sure how or if they will prioritize higher earning families for the vouchers. Pro rated would be fair, but who knows.

I did a quick google search. Do you have a link to this?

God. I love progressives.
“What? You can’t afford private school? You should move to a new town!”
Never a single thought at making the public school system accountable for burning through huge piles of cash while not educating 90% of their students.
“Everyone in New Orleans should move!”
Do you hear yourself?

I always thought that the goal of these voucher programs was to incentivize the poorest of the poor to take the money and not send your kids to public schools.
It’s a certain segment of society that makes public education so ineffective. Keeping those children home would seriously unburden public school systems.

Private school vouchers are just a hand out for the middle class.
So a “hand out” to those that pay taxes is a bad thing?

Well the last time we tried vouchers in Louisiana, it was a colossal failure. But hey, let’s go broker trying again.
A study of Louisiana's voucher program failure may show the worst academic non-performance. Published in the American Economic Journal, the Louisiana study found that participation in the voucher plan “lowers math scores . . . and also reduces achievement in reading, science, and social studies.”
So I generally don’t like responding here, but I think this is important. In my opinion this point is kind of irrelevant. The outcome of giving citizens choice isn’t for the government to judge. Freedom includes the freedom to make the wrong choice. Even if some or most make the wrong choice that doesn’t mean the government should force the populace as a whole to subsidize what the government thinks is the correct choice.

Has not passed yet.
You sure? I know the St. George school district stuff went back to committee, but the Landry Gator program funding has been approved from what I was told.
