You got an audit letter with W2s and standard deductions?

When you start making over 250k AGI, H&R Block warns you are at a higher risk of audit even if you are W2 / std deduction.

Let’s keep this thread alive so we can hear how the audits went. Hope none of y'all end up in the slammer.

I got audited at a job while in college making about 12k a year. Your naïveté and general misplaced arrogance on most subjects is astounding. You know so much about so little

Bruh

If you make over $250k and go to Block, then you are dumb enough to fall for this drivel so that way you will fork over more money for “audit protection”.

I got 3 of them..one legit where my CPA had forgotten something..2 ridiculous requests for back money interest and penalties that I had to research and defend....I have no deductions other than standard, kids are grown, do well, and believe I am easy pickings for these new hire IRS agents and their AI..it's gotten so bad I hate to open the mailbox.Never cheated on taxes in my life...I am truly sick of this shite and this corrupt administration.

They will pay interest on the refund

I haven’t heard of any delays like this.

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a W-2 family taking the standard deduction getting a 90 day review.

Same here.

It must be so rare that I don’t even know if the Service pays interest on the 90 days of withheld refund

They will. They have 21 days I believe before that click starts ticking. And they will 1099 you.

A couple of years ago, during the pandemic, we received an IRS letter stating that we owed $189,000 in unpaid taxes, interest, and penalties. I hired a top-tier tax attorney to help me. He said that the IRS agents were all working from home, with little training and even less supervision. My attorney made a few filings, and a few months later, the IRS sent a follow-up letter saying they owed us $65.

There was a news story recently about IRS withholding refunds arbitrarily. It's a war on the People and a controlled demolition of the United States.

To be fair, he didn't say he went to Block. He may just referring to using their software to file. In either case, lol at thinking anybody at Block is going to be worth a damn on an audit.

That’s because most of those earners are not W2.

If you are a truly W2/std deduction with unquestionable dependents, they essentially audit you automatically anyway.

I would say "no." He took the standard deduction.

Then what are they? A twenty-something plant operator and his dental hygienist wife can easily make over $200 thousand.

This is the crazy thing. They hold your money due to their mistake. Give you a little interest on it and tax the crap out of their mistake

If this case which I have no reason to doubt you, ask them how much they think you owe and why?

If you have proof on your w2 you paid what the book says you owe, then I wouldn't sweat it (though you are absolutely right to be pissed and looking at taking a shot at them possibly).
