Just reading between the lines and listening to all the bitching I think there were issues with the IRS this year with returns. I've heard a lot of random people bitching about this (IRL and on social media). It's not a defense of the IRS, but this is a different universe than a potential audit.

I don't even know how you could audit a W2/standard deduction scenario other than verifying inputs on the W2 were done correctly and the software calculated the deduction correctly

We got one, too. Received the first letter stating a 90-day review. Found a second letter on my IRS account that I, funny enough, never received giving me two weeks to send in more documentation. I would've missed the deadline had I not been tipped off by a Redditor to check. Failure to send in the additional documentation leads to a deduction in any return, of course. I'm sure the IRS would hate for that to happen.

Exactly. Outside of a clerical error this makes no sense. That being said, I’ve only ever prepared 706s. I don’t even prepare my own returns. Hopefully there is an accountant on here that can explain it.

A good accountant is worth their weight in golf!

ETA: worth their weight in gold too.

You got an audit letter with W2s and standard deductions?

It's weird. Wife and I each have a single W2, standard deduction, two children with no childcare credit. $130k gross income, we're lower middle class. We literally have nothing that we file but our W2s and mortgage. No student loans or anything extra.

Somehow, we got an audit letter last year. Nothing came of it except for our return being delayed.

I suspect this is the culprit.

Said we are in a 90 day review and will be holding return funds, that if we think we made a mistake we can file an amended return. A middle schooler could do our taxes.

Gotcha

I don't think those IRS agents have been hired yet.

I think the IRS is fricking up returns somehow and using this as cover to delay them.

Don't hesitate to do this as standardized deduction screams that they are wasting time and money.

They have been hired and are on the job. There was some official announcement in an article and they were bragging about getting a real person maybe if you call the IRS.

I am a happy democrat, I think true the vote are right wing crazies. The IRS are the best people and have the best SEIU making sure the fine people agents are paid well and have healthcare and full medical leave for trans queer surgery.

They rock!

I think he means his refund was delayed, not that he was late in filing his return.
