I'm interested to see your argument. I'm sure it will be well thought out, and it was not designed purely to troll.

Church
I know that they think this is the "right side of history" - but all that work they've invested in trying to gather up the latino and black populations into loyal little voting herds, they do realize that these populations are HEAVILY invested in their churches and their faith, right?
The more they turn away from Judeo-Christian principles and deny (regardless of actual faith, spirituality or belief) the integral role those principles have played in the rise and prominence of the United States as a world power, the more they're going to turn off these folks.

Oh really? Is there a group in America more heavily invested in church than African Americans?

quote:I just realized it wasn't Joy Behar who said this (I was going to lead with "I don't want to be seen as defending anything Joy Behar said" ) In any event, I had to look up who Joy Reid was - I think maybe I've seen her on Bill Maher before, but I don't really know who she is or what baggage she brings to the table...just my roundabout way of saying I'm taking her tweet at face value.
Elaborate
She seems to be making the somewhat simple claim that Trump's SOTU speech was retrograde in its appeal to nationalistic tropes of the 50s. Do you find that to be controversial? I really don't. Now, I suppose the OP was objecting to the implication that these institutions are not worth appealing to. Is that what we're talking about? If so:
My main observation would be that re police/military/national anthem, I find appeals to them to be distasteful. In particular, I now find it sort of creepy to sing about your nation state (particularly if it's required - a la The Pledge).
Re the military, it's complicated. I like many aspects of it, I'm thankful for it, and I respect the vast majority of its members. OTOH, our military budget is preposterously bloated and wasteful (F-35, I'm looking at YOU), and I believe Trump is calling for a big INCREASE in spending from here.
And the police - I think it should be obvious to anyone with eyes that the mindless deference once granted to police was naive and misguided. In the 1950s, law enforcement was one of the primary tools of subjugation and disenfranchisement of black Americans.
Church - I'm atheist, so I don't like appeals to it in general.
Family - I already said, I don't agree with its inclusion on this list. IMO, family should be the focus of every American.

Many socially liberal Democrats are professing Christians that have a misguided view of government from a Biblical perspective. They think the Democrat platform better aligns with the "social gospel" as they believe it is put forth in the Bible. If the Democrats officially wage war against Christianity and other faiths, they are going to lose a lot of support.

Ok. I have to because I'm not searching. Who is Joy Reid and why should I care?
