Wow!!!!! Talk about setting the bar extremely low. I as much as anyone enjoyed his crimestopper bits, but I really don't know what kind of message the people of Acadiana were sending by voting for him for Conress.

What are some of the specific tax increases that are being proposed?

So some perspective: about a billion in tax revenue is going away next year.

Which leads to a ideological question-if you renew $800 million in taxes, are you increasing taxes (since absent a change in the law you would be paying less) or are cutting taxes since $800 million is less than the billion that is being collected now?

I tend to lean toward the second perspective, but I can see the argument for the first. This is part of the beef between the House Repubs and JBE. The other part is that the Repubs are upset that JBE only proposed revenue solutions for the cliff. No cuts or even long-term fiscal reform.

That said here are the current proposals:
$280ish million as a result of the Trump tax reform
$300ish million from a renewal of 1/4 of a penny of sales tax and cleaning the other 4 pennies. No tax on mm&e but a 2% tax on business utilities. (look for this to go to 1/2 a cent in the Senate)
$100ish million in a reduction of excess itemized deductions (look for this to get massively reduced via amendment)
And a renewal of some reduction on credits and rebates and deductions. $30million? Not sure.

So you are still short of the $994 million cliff, but withing striking distance. Add another $224 when they increase the renewal to 1/2 and that pretty much gets you there. Oh and they will redirect some dedicated funds for the rest. And probably make some very small cuts.

Ooh, I know! The answers are:
Scalise, Congress
Cassidy, Senate
Graves, Congress
Johnson, Congress
Richmond, Congress
Landreiu, Lobbyist
Vitter, Lobbyist
Richmond, Congress

Abraham (Congress) is 100% running.

Fairly certain Kennedy is too.

I highly doubt Cajun John Wayne is running for Governor. If he was serious about doing so, he would have continued his schtik in Congress in order to keep the media attention on him and build name-recognition. Higgins hasn't done that. He's kept a very low profile in D.C.

Landry's first cousin actually is Troy "choot 'em" Landry. I met both of them at a fundraiser for Jeff way back when he was first running for Congress. I don't think that will be a problem.

Abraham, as the rep from Monroe, likely has Phil Robertson in his back pocket.

Did you see Morrell's comments? The approach the House approved is almost surely dead in Rev and Fisc. I don't think they are going to do anything of note this session.

I’m a recent LA transplant, but it seems that most politicians here are seriously dubious.

But my state gave us Slick Willy, arguably the biggest dirtbag to have ever occupied the White House. So I usually just sit in the corner and sulk.

Maybe in N LA, coonasses historically reject that and all the people are south of I10. His endorsement could be big.

Posturing. If this dies because of the Senate, JBE looks bad. The Senate is pretty much an extension of the governor's office.

That said they will increase the sales tax by 1/2 cent. They will strip off some language that ties it to the other republican bills. They will probably increase the taxes on business as a bargaining chip.

Not sure what they will do to the excess itemized. The house might pass a very small reduction. Not sure the Senate will fiddle with that for fear of sending it back to the House.

We will know a LOT more by tonight.

I don't know. Morrell usually operates more like a bull in a china shop. The floor is going to be insane today.

Every proposal I have seen whether from the tax and spend Governor or the republicans continues to put film makers and pensions of the members of the government class ahead of eduction, health care and taxpayers.

Screw them all.

He'll make it rain all day long north of Ville Platte, but if he has to go against someone with any amount of name recognition in the south (Landry or Kennedy), he's DOA. It's a shame because Abraham is a great man with a solid platform, but Louisiana doesn't a competent administrator. Louisiana wants a charismatic King and always has.

Abraham may be the least charismatic man I've ever seen make it to his level of politics (and that list includes Cassidy). He acts too old and straight-laced for South Louisiana which wants someone to go drinking with. He doesn't have Kennedy's one-liners or Landry's coonass charm. He doesn't have Edward's ability to work the bully pulpit or Vitter's expert level trolling. He doesn't have Jindal's braniac crisis management nor Blanco's emotional connection or Foster's good 'ol boy mystique. He doesn't have Edwin's unbelievable talent for remembering names and family connections of people he met once 40 years, nor has be been certified "not crazy".

Unless Abraham is the only Republican running, he has no chance of making the runoff.

Well, it depends. If you create a bunch of new taxes on certain groups of taxpayers to offset the expiration of taxes on another group, that would be tax increases -- at least on the first group.

Worse, a certain group of people didn't really see any benefit from the Trump tax cuts. If you own a passthrough (LLC or subchapter S) company that provides professional services (accounting, legal, or consulting), you only saw a 2% cut in taxes. But, you did get the increase on the limitation of mortgage and property tax payments. So, in effect, some breakeven. So, these JBE increases have the potential to have a big impact on some.

you think they will keep it temporary? Julia O'Donoghue last night:

quote:

The tax package coming up on the floor Monday relies heavily on temporary sales tax hikes. About $302 million of the $436 million in taxes the House will consider relies on a bill (House Bill 23) retaining a portion of a higher sales tax rate and keeping some sales tax breaks off the books -- but only until July 1, 2021.
