quote:

Gov. John Bel Edwards asked the Louisiana Public Service Commission Wednesday (Jan. 3) to look at lowering utility rates for state residents and businesses now that utility companies won't have to pay as much in federal taxes.

Edwards, a Democrat, said current utility rates have been set based on utility companies having to pay more in federal income taxes than they will under a new tax plan Congress recently approved. Because the law recently drops federal income tax rates considerably for utilities, the utility rates should be reworked to reflect the lower costs for companies, according to Edwards.

quote:

The governor also said the commission should reconsider how net operating losses and the depreciation of property is calculated for the companies it regulates -- if those businesses have benefited from the federal tax bill.

The Public Service Commission is not beholden to the governor or the Louisiana Legislature. Voters select public service commissions in independent elections. The commission set utility rates for most parts of Louisiana. An exception is New Orleans, where the city council regulates some of those businesses.

Something JBE is proposing I can get behind.

He should ask the legislature to deregulate like Texas did.

But I bet he doesn't have the balls to take on Entergy.

He's attempting to free up cash for an increase in state taxes

Well some utilities are co-ops and don't pay taxes. I would much rather see the for profit utilities invest in their infrastructure to increase reliability and create jobs.

The JBE approach sounds like big government socialism, again.

I'm not so much in favor of deregulation, not for what it can save the utility companies, but what companies do to customers after deregulation.. Like what happened with Cable tv. It's criminal that people in smaller towns pay as much as people in big cities do for Cable and internet and the service in more rural areas is piss poor.

JBE needs to focus on cutting spending, that is the only way out of his financial crisis.

Cut spending, not raise taxes

Not a bad idea, but probably better done as avoidance of future increases. Not as sexy, but it lets us see the impact of the tax bill (and other factors) first.

Only if he can convince the legislature that's full of attorneys to enact tort reform and put restrictions on all these attorney ads on TV and billboards.

Prudence and moderation? BEFORE political pandering?? What a concept!

So THAT'S why my Entergy stock dropped 1% in price in about 30 minutes this afternoon.

We have the same crap in Florida and I don't pay half what my mom pays for auto insurance. Car and home owners insurance for her each year is over $3200. It's ridiculous.

That actually seems like fair logic and reasoning.

There are many reasons why 10% of all people born in Louisiana move to TX. Better jobs, better paying jobs, cheeper everything, no state income tax, and energy deregulation.

In October, have 1200 sq ft house in Louisiana not lived in bill was $76. Have a 2,500 sq ft house in Houston lived in and electric bill was $45. It is a daunting task to pick and electric company in TX but well worth it. 64 companies and with various plans and how they get their energy. I have 318 options with various plans in Houston and shop around every year. Never had the same provider twice in the past 5 years. Really enjoy the cheap electric rates.

I pay in the neighborhood of $300-$350 per month in SC.

House about 3K sqft and not that old.

I miss my LA power bill.

Question, how does the PSC figure the rate structure?

Is it making sure the utility is profitable? Do they just look at profits, or do they consider profits after taxes?

That's the question.

You got that right. I remember a couple years ago there was a strong tropical storm and the Baton Rouge power grid was absolutely hammered because Entergy had not maintained the system. Meanwhile, Lafayette, with its publicly owned system, and EATEL, and the coops all came through fine because of what should be standard maintenance.
