They often have two conditions that increase the chance of DVT and subsequent clots breaking off compared to ordinary people.
1. The taller you are, the higher the chance of DVT; the difference is remarkable between a really short person and a really tall one. Pro basketball players are a good example here.
2. People with high levels of cardio fitness often have high hematocrit levels, which increase the chance of DVT. Pro cyclists are a good example here.
Body size of athletes in certain sports and high levels of fitness actually have negatives that most people don't expect. It shouldn't surprise anyone that physical outliers are more prone to certain problems than people inside 2 SD.
Does their frequency of flying make them higher risk too? I remember something about the travel being the big reason Bosh ultimately had to retire early.

Yes, and not just flying, but long drives as well (any prolonged sedentary status, hence anticoagulation, sequential compression devices for ICU patients). He had a transatlantic flight which is as a long flight is a risk. The Eagles said he was “cleated”, though and I’m not sure about the relative plausibility of that injury resulting in PE.

This line often misleads people.
Even scientists don’t trust the science. That’s the nature of the profession. Their job is to challenge prevailing “science”.
The rest of us just have to make the best decision for ourselves with the best evidence available and an understanding of the potential pitfalls of trusting the standard recommendations.

Makes sense the way you explained it. Interesting.

Every list that you add to keeps getting longer
What sort of idiocy is this?

You gotta wonder where the Player's Union was when they were being forced to inject an experimental drug with unknown long term side-effects?
