Dr. George Diaz, the section chief for infectious diseases at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, Wash., told "America's News HQ" on Sunday that most patients infected with the coronavirus can recover at home and do not need to be hospitalized.

Italian hospitals are being overwhelmed by this
If they are being overwhelmed by 9,000 extra hospitalized people than that's as good a reason as any not to adopt a national healthcare system. You'd think millions are seriously ill when you read what's coming out of Italy. Then you realize the number is less than 10,000 and you start laughing your arse off at the incompetence and fearmongering.

An Italian being dramatic and emotional. Color me shocked

Sounds like the script of World War Z
I never saw that movie, but was thinking something similar,
because it reads like it was written by a professional drama writer.

No it’s not. One is to stop people from freaking out, spending unnecessary money on unnecessary things. The other is to stoke panic and make the current president look bad (media’s goal). Shot there was a poster on here I think yesterday that admitted he enjoyed the political damage trump was receiving.

H1N1 and SARS were so much deadlier than this, especially in its initial outbreak.
People just love crime/death/disease porn and the media is happy to give it to us. The more dramatic and harrowing the better

Well, mr posts in ever virus thread, I'm no virologist. I dont know shite about viruses. But I do know that the south koreans I do business with dont give a damn about it. Nor do the Europeans, Indians, or even Chinese. Why are we freaking the frick out here?
Because OMB and the media is our friend and protector

True, and throw in TDS and it’s at another level though - off the chain like we’re seeing.

Sure it probably will not be as bad as the doomer predictions, but I'd like to be as prepared as possible in case it's worse than the average person thinks.
You know it’s possible to do this without subscribing to poetic and fear inducing fan fiction like the OP right?
Wash your hands, have approximately 2 weeks of non perishable foods available, and take emergenC.
All possible without the gnashing if teeth and screaming to the sky about how everyone is going to get sick and die and how OMB’s government is incompetent.

I really don't understand this war on panic.
Embracing and lauding panic. A quality I look for in physicians.
Oh yeah, the last pseudo-personal experience I had with healthcare in Italy involved a friend in a hospital room shared with several strangers and their dogs.

I live in a city of about 280,000 people, about 15% of whom are over 65. The entire city has materially less than 200 adult ICU beds, most of which are always in use. This isn't atypical. In the US there are about 49M people over 65 and about 100K ICU beds. They're expensive to staff and round on and you generally don't need more. Most countries, I've learned, have much less ICU capacity than we do. Given all that, I'm not surprised Italy got overrun and don't think we are in the clear either.

Strangely, the middle road is the correct road. A healthy respect for this virus is best.
What is the goal here is to slow down the infections till three warmer weather comes which coronavirus does not like.
That will slow infections even more.
Italy totally screwed the pooch on this one. Whole we started slow by the end of the week we will be up and running full.
I think the fear over this is overblown, but as said I have a healthy respect for this virus and want to slow the spread of the virus.

This is in fact serious, just as the regular flu is serious if you have a compromised immune system or are old. 25-30k elderly and at risk people die every year due to flu in the us even with our hospital systems. No one gives a damn because it’s normal like car wrecks and fat people having heart attacks. The only difference here is marginal risk and media coverage, period.
There is a vaccine for influenza. The majority of elderly people get it. What do you think those numbers would look like if there was no vaccine for influenza?
