I don't see how, without special, radical, circumstances, one could hijack a pager and get those sorts of explosions out of regular pagers/batteries.

Explosives inserted into it. Supply chain attacks are not a new concept. The Snowden docs had info about shipments of Cisco networking equipment being intercepted and bugged before going to their final foreign destination. I would think given how many devices were affected, probably the entire shipment was pre-prepared and then the entire shipment was replaced once it was intercepted.

This has been awesome to watch on the twitter. Scary crazy though. Looking forward to hearing what to avoid in the future. Hope if musk comes out with a phone this isn't a feature.
Interesting thing about watching the videos is that it was just some random dude going about his day, so essentially this has flagged ones they had no clue were in the leadership. So even if it didn't kill many, it did a good job a calling out and shamimg some people amongst their neighbors who can now blame them for things that are happening to them.

Watch more of the videos so you notice how a guy with no Terror Pager standing on the pager side of a dude that got "nicked" has zero damage. These are July 4th injuries to people not wearing terror pagers, far less significant that what Jason Pierre-Part was left with (har har.)

How do you hack a pager to have their batteries explode? And who TF are carrying around pagers these days?
1) You infiltrate the supply chain of pagers at the outset and install an explosive. Then you track the numbers that are associated with the suspected terrorists and only detonate these devices
2) Hezbollah leaders stopped using cellphone as they were concerned about IDF abilities to track their movements. They thought pagers would be a better means of communication
3). Not only was this a genius way to target terrorists but now their communications have been stymied as anyone with a remaining pager has no doubt thrown it away by now.

I would be worried about what Israel has in place right now that can explode in my own house that I don't know anything about. The paranoia has to be at a fevered pitch right now.

Yeah, I'm reasonably sure this is a supply chain attack. If pagers had the ability to be weaponized like that then we'd be living in a different world wrt advanced persistent threats and nation state actors. Someone mentioned the Flipper Zero upthread (and I own one)... you can do a Bluetooth spam attack on an iPhone and, yeah, it might warm it up but it's more likely to just temporarily brick it. They're fun, though. I've tested some of its capabilities in different stores and, uh... yeah, they can do a lot of stuff.
