It's a union thing. Similarly, I once had a job that included working a few trade shows from time to time. We were forbidden from setting up our own booths in Union States and had to pay union guys a ton of money to set up simple trade show displays. They'd usually mess them up causing us to take them apart and fix them.

My friends and I once took a road trip to Oregon for the 4th of july. We were staying in this small town right on the coast, and in order to make it back in time for work we had to leave in the middle of the night. We were empty on gas and the only station in town was closed. We noticed that the pumps still have card readers so we tried to pay at the pump. Within seconds we saw flashing lights and a cop who told us that it is against the law to pump your own gas. So we had to drive 20 minutes out of our way and risk running out of gas to get to the nearest 24 hour gas station. We had a great time in Oregon but that last night left a bad taste in our mouths about the state.

Full Service was great. This isn't full service though, just fueling up.
... windows, oil, and glance at the tires. Actually a pretty good way to sell a little bit more along the way.
Old is remembering when they gave you stamps or glasses or such, instead of just having a gas-war.

Of course, all stations used to be like this - not from force of law, but because 'that was just the way it was.' You'd get your tires aired up, your oil level checked, brake fluid topped off, etc.
Yep, I'm old enough to remember this. In fact, my high school girlfriends dad owned a Texaco station and her and her 3 sisters all worked there pumping gas and washing windows. They would wear shorts and many men hit on them regularly. It pissed me off.
The only good thing is that I didn't have to wait in line to get gas during the late 70's gas shortage periods.

it is NOT a union thing. The gas station attendants in NJ are not unionized. But it IS a jobs thing. A lot of jobs would be lost. I prefer having someone else pump my gas, so I'm fine with it.

I will add to what I posted. Not a union thing, but the Gas Retailers Association (the OWNERS of the stations) are very powerful and have lobbied against self service for years.

Wasn't sure about sarcasm, but yes, you are correct. Most of the attendants were young high school kids. And they all have to wear fluorescent yellow vest.

I'm 99.99% sure there isn't a single union gas pumper in the state of New Jersey. I'd speculate that such a law exists because people used to steal gas, not because of jobs.

Quality Stamps and those Union 76 things to put on your antenna.

it's actually because NJ believes its citizens are mentally deficient
LINK
quote:
Enacted in 1949, the Retail Gasoline Dispensing Safety Act and Regulations banned drivers from pumping their own gas in New Jersey, and the rules are still in effect. Like so many laws, the statute claims the ban is for drivers’ own good:
quote:
In 2015, New Jersey General Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon introduced a bill that would lift the ban. “I am offended by people that argue that New Jerseyans are mentally incapable of pumping their own gas without setting themselves on fire," O'Scanlon said in a press statement.
quote:
Despite this helpful suggestion, O’Scanlon’s bill was not to be, as State Senate President Stephen Sweeney blocked the vote. "I will oppose any attempt to rescind the law that has effectively served the best interests of the state's motorists for decades," Sweeney said in a press statement. "As long as I am Senate President, the ban on self-serve will stay in place."
if you want to see some real scary authoritarian/nanny state shite, read this next comment:
quote:
"We've been doing it the right way in New Jersey,” Sweeney concluded. “We should not change."

I live in Washington right across the border from Oregon. In Washington you pump your own gas like a big boy, in Oregon some toothless freak that's unemployable elsewhere does it. I hate it so much, and good forbid you forget and start pumping your own

Oh, my mistake. I made the assumption that it was.

You're trying too hard.
Not everything is a liberal v conservative narrative.
What kind of "man" would vote for a lying, cheating, inept, corrupt, pussy grabbing asshat?

You can find protectionism like this in every state under the guise of somehow upholding quality standards for the public.
On one hand, these are entrenched industries that have employed people for a long time.
On the other hand, the policies are dishonest and stupid.
In Georgia (and other states) for example - the alcohol distribution industry.

why aren't you allowed to pump your own gas in NJ?
the only near logical thing would be the amount of females that put it on automatic pump and sit in their cars and text and muti task and the static after she gets up to the pump in her car-- causes an explosion.
