Prior to Helene, I would have agreed that they need to be dismantled. They screwed some serious stuff up in NC, but here in the Augusta area they’ve helped by funding debris pickup for 90 days and some other assistance that hasn’t made headlines. Of course, these are all contractors doing the work. They’re poorly managed and probably bloated. They’ve helped in some ways where state and local governments would have been overwhelmed.
If it is the same as Louisiana, your local government selected a contractor for debris pickup the before the disaster and had plans in place to handle debris pickup. The local government pays the bill and FEMA reimburses the local government for X scope of work and days months or years after the disaster. That is why those contractors will hire more than just debris pick up workers, they also employ some white collar workers to follow around and pencil push how much debris was picked up and where. That is so FEMA will pay, if is not filled out correctly the local government doesn’t get paid or is delayed. FEMA just writes a check, but you have to make sure everything is in order or you can get lost in the process.
Fun fact some local governments are still awaiting reimbursements for Katrina contracts.

I can’t imagine AI won’t take over. Just walk thru some tube and it analyzes your photo boarding pass and scans your stuff as you never quit walking. The way we do it was thrown together in a panic 24 years ago and never changed.

Well if you don’t notice any dumb people on Capitol Hill, then no offense, you’re the dumb one BamaCoaster is talking about.

Given that anyone who would bring a bomb on a plane is looking to die, I highly, highly doubt that.

They aren't great but what was the correct answer after 911?
Posted on 12/1/24 at 11:04 am to jmarto1
I was already living here in Trinidad when 911 happened. I got a new passport issued here at the embassy.....and then it started. I was flying to Miami every month, I would go through immigration and when I got to customs they would stick me in the glass room for everyone to look at as they passed by.
Well after about the 10th trip, their computers went down and I sat in the room for 2 hours. They came and said "you are free to go" Thats it. I started screaming "free to go, free to go, you mfrs kidnapped a US citizen and held him against his will with no reason". Got a supervisor and he said I had the same last name as some guy in Cali and they had to check it wasnt me. Filled out a form, which they could have done to start with.
I filled out the form and the next time, as I went through immigration I pulled out the letter from customs, and the guy said "nah they got a code next to your name that means you aint the one".
Never met a gangster in "the room" just a lot of mistaken identities.

It was in the last book I read. The chapter was about how when govt sees a problem they instinctively say 'We gotta do something!'. They don't put much effort or time into whether the solution is a good idea. The book used the TSA as a perfect example.

The people who carry bombs onto planes are already very comfortable with the thought of dying. Dying is actually a desirable outcome for them.

That is exactly how it used to be and we were pretty damn safe
This.
Prior to 9/11 airport security was closer to mall security level than courthouse security and it was mostly fine.
A few high jackings every now and then, but not too many.
Then our own government flew a cruise missile into the pentagon, and intentionally allowed some towel heads to hi jack planes as a red herring while they demolished the WTC buildings with pre-planted charges so that they could hide their own thievery and malfeasance, start an unnecessary war in order to feed the military industrial complex, and bring in an era of authoritarianism with the Patriot Act.
TSA is going to prevent another CIA op against the American people?
GTFO.
Unbelievable that you are still simping for them.

If you fly out of Orlando, it’s to your benefit to get TSA Pre check
I can’t take any complaints seriously from people who don’t have TSA precheck.
They are offering you a short cut and you are choosing not to take it.
It’s the best travel hack currently available.
Yes, TSA sucks. But with precheck you rarely ever wait and don’t have to interact with them.

You do realize that reliance on degrees and group think are actually signs of lack of intelligence right? Actual smart people don’t care about degrees and rarely engage in group think

I tried to use my TSA issued TWIC card to board a plane and they would not let me through security with it.

Take a minute and let's talk about how fricked this system is
1. We create a miserably slow painful and invasive search process to access the gates.
2. We offer with fees of course(extortion) a way to make this terrible experience we created better for you and only slightly inconveniencing.
Now as we talk about it can they ever do away with this system as it provides revenue for them.
Someone's gotta pay for the warehouses full of security equipment they can't even deploy to the airports.....

They may not be dumb people, but they do dumb things, on a regular basis.
So that makes them dumb to me!
So that makes them dumb to me!

It's not working. Make public hanging the punishment for carrying a bomb on a plane and it would go to zero. Just scan people walking through for metal. If you carry a gun like a Glock that doesn't show it's automatic 10 years in prison
Seems like TSA-ZERO, means its working, there are things they do that you don't have a clue about. Google items found at TSA checkpoints. You might be surprised.

It’s a jobs program disguised as “safety” at this point.
To stop another 9/11 again all you had to do was arm pilots and add locks to cockpit doors. That’s it.
To really stop another 9/11, do the above and check the bags/pat down all Arab looking men aged 16+
Instead we’ve massively increased the cost, both time and money, of plane travel and inconvenienced every single traveler in this country for 23 years. It’s ridiculous and Bin Laden and the terrorists truly won in this regard

It’s truly ridiculous that we all accept this.
Last few times the Precheck line was longer than the regular line. Soon we’ll need to pay the Pre-Pre check fee I guess

Disney does this and I don’t even know it. Universal is similar.

When you live in a rural area and most of your destinations end up being rural areas? TSA Pre isn’t even a thing.
And why should I have to pay some sort of fee to the mafia to skip to the front of the line? It’s 100% a shakedown.
