NATO expanding its presence on the Russian border is the issue here.

NATO has been on the Russian border for over 20 years

And the whole time broke our word. I get you are a NEOLIB/CON, but this is a fact:

Baker told Gorbachev that "if we maintain a presence in a Germany that is a part of NATO, there would be no extension of NATO's jurisdiction for forces of NATO 1 inch to the east."

"I put the following question to (Gorbachev)," Baker recounted in a letter to German Chancellor Helmut Kohl. "‘Would you prefer to see a united Germany outside of NATO, independent and with no U.S. forces, or would you prefer a unified Germany to be tied to NATO, with assurances that NATO’s jurisdiction would not shift 1 inch eastward from its present position?’"

We pushed and he responded.

I don't know about natural enemy, but Russia's neighbors tend to not like them very much.

Good point, but it underlines my view. We aren't neighbors with Russia. We have the mightiest military and two oceans to guard us...not to mention a dominant economy and culture.

No nation is our natural enemy. I agree with most that China is the only adversary that could threaten us.

The Atlantic and Pacific Oceans exclude us from having any 'natural' enemies. The only 'enemies' we have are the domestic ones who invent boogiemen for us to be afraid of so they can control us. Russia, Iran, Iraq, Libya, cartels, etc, etc, etc......

We are neighbors. Bering Straits and maybe 50 miles of water separate us in Alaska. Strong Russian leaders have a tendency to be expansionistic whether they are czars, Bolsheviks and it would seem Putin.

On a certain level they are no different from us in that respect

Russia sees the US and Europe as enemies. You only need to catch a small amount of Russian state tv for this to be clear.

The same way the Democrats and the US Media claim that Russia is an enemy. It's much easier to control their voters if Democrats have a boogieman.
