Even if not a “direct threat”, it would seem the potential for a government that was friendly - or even neutral - to the U.S. would always be a large plus and much preferable to a government that has been hostile to the U.S. since its inception.

Since the Iranian Revolution in the 1970s, Iran has been the primary source of funding and organization for Islamic terrorism. If the country goes more moderate, this will have a huge impact in the Middle East and elsewhere. A moderate Iran would be extremely important in the next 100 years.
