Please reference each post (by Username and Time) that YOU think constitutes a defense of the length of this sentence.

PREDICTION. You will point to a post or poster who tried to explain the difference between (1) burning an owned flag in a perfectly-legal protest and (2) violating the rights of another person by destroying that person’s property.

According to libs conservatives are the minority based upon the popular vote. So when libs burn the American or Trump flags, would that also be considered a hate crime and harassment?

Or perhaps we should recognize that the sentencing in this case is stupid and NOT want that type of idiocy applied broadly elsewhere.

I agree with you, but it seems that this kind of sentencing is always one sided. "Hate crimes" are only applied when the victim is somehow considered special by the left (or Jewish). Black people attacking whites are never charged with hate crimes, even when they admit that the attack was based on race.

Maybe charging leftists with hate crimes is the best way to get rid of this stupid legislation.

Stealing someone else's property valued at less than $100 in the year 2000 probably would have carried with it a fine and nothing else. This man's comments MIGHT have triggered a pissed off judge to sentence him to 30 days in jail. And even that's a maybe.

What does that have to do with the price of rice in China? If prosecutors don't add the hate crime element to it (itself a felony), this guy isn't three strikes and your out.

Hate crimes are violations of free speech. I don't care if this guy is the biggest piece of shite in the world.

stupid judge, hopefully he is the kind that has to be reelected. every taxpaying county resident needs to be aware that the state will charge the county 40 grand a year. 16 years at 40 = 424,000 dollars the dumbass judge wasted

If I take your wallet and set your car on fire, is that freedom of speech?

If it was not his property than the guy was clearly wrong ,but 16 years for this? That is a violation of the 8th Amendment. People have gotten far less for committing actual acts of violence on other people. That is a ridiculous sentence and the judge that did this should be pulled from the bench.

Looks like guy's sentence was enhanced under habitual offender law. Two prior felony convictions I believe one of the articles said.

That is still ridiculous. 1 year may be appropriate if that is the case ,but even that would be harsh. A few months in jail and community service would be about right.
