Instead of Socialism, how about a well funded Democracy?

Here’s where our politicians have completely fricked up the United States of America.
Untold trillions spent on nonstop military interventions, fraud in this country on a mind boggling scale, runaway unchecked spending by Congress, government waste on a scale that is unimaginable….what if we were able to cut 75% of that?
From sources you can find on the internet………….
“GAO estimates that federal fraud alone costs roughly $233 billion to $521 billion per year. Separately, agencies reported about $186 billion in improper payments in fiscal 2025, although improper payments include mistakes and overpayments, not just intentional fraud.
Since 2003, reported improper payments have totaled about $3 trillion.”
Then add:
Avoidable military interventions and reconstruction expenses.
Weapons programs that exceed budgets or do not perform adequately.
Corporate subsidies and tax preferences.
Duplicative federal programs and administrative overhead.
Interest paid because previous spending was borrowed rather than taxed.
Had even 75% of those avoidable costs been prevented and the savings used to reduce debt or invested in productive assets, the cumulative benefit could plausibly amount to many trillions of dollars.
That could have financed substantially more of the following:
Universal or near-universal healthcare coverage.
Better Social Security solvency.
More affordable college and vocational education.
Paid family leave and childcare assistance.
Improved infrastructure.
Stronger poverty and disability programs.
Lower taxes for working- and middle-class households.
It also could have prevented part of today’s interest burden. CBO currently projects a $1.9 trillion federal deficit for fiscal 2026, rising to $3.1 trillion by 2036, with rising interest costs driving much of the deterioration.
This from the Congressional Budget Office.

Fraud is a vicious cycle that continues to destroy its host.

Lack of funds isn’t the issue. Fraud and malfeasance is syphoning dollars from where they should go

How about a well functioning republic?

That's implied.
Being a democracy and republic are not exclusive traits. I don't think anyone on here, even cubbies, Tboy, and VOR, want a pure/direct democracy

Your title had me worried because our country isn’t a democracy but I decided to read anyway, and I gotta admit, your content was really good! I was all on board until I read:
So your premise is that Socialism sucks and we should’ve run a better democracy so we could have socialism???
Edited to offer my alternative solution.
A well functioning republic with a balanced budget, a non interventionist but strong military, and a TRUE uncorrupted free enterprise system would lead to a prosperous economy and appropriate funding and pricing for goods and services leading to lower inflation and higher affordability of things like: healthcare, retirement surpluses, groceries, etc

You've never voted? Heard of people voting? Heard about elections?

Ok, then let’s focus on the well functioning part instead of the well funded part. It’s already quite well funded.

First I’ll grant you- I was playing semantics. That said, I oCertainly have. Every time though it was as a part of a democraticly elected representative republic.
Question for you:
Have you ever voted on the federal budget? What about on whether or not we should declare war? I’ve never been asked to cast a vote on say the SAVE Act, have you? We don’t actually want or have a Democracy where the public votes on everything. We elect people to represent us

That kind of thinking is what leads to the abuse in the first place.
Don't you get it?
The bigger the government gets, the more fraud and waste you're going to have.
Every time.
"This time we'll do it different and it will work," is the same thing the socialists claim, and for the very same reason.

You do realize that

None of these are actually examples of socialism. They are examples of social services paid for by tax revenue generated by capitalism.
Of those given, other than the universal healthcare, what is the problem?
College and universities in America were intended to be free and were, for the most part, free for about a full century.
Ok, paid family leave and child assistance should be more of benefit paid to you, by your employer, so that is capitalistic.
Better social security solvency should have happened when we tried to get it invested into the market in the 1990's, so that would have been capitalistic.
As far as improved infrastructure, poverty and disability (which is part of SSI) goes, that should be government aid built off of taxation of the capitalist system. We can argue about where taxes should come from.

Genuine, true accountability and elimination of the existing fraud and waste would do wonders.
Posted on 7/23/26 at 8:40 am to Geekboy
Just cut the budget by half across the board. That will make each agency root out corruption and root out fraud on their own…..

All of them are examples of collectivism, however, the logical conclusion of which is socialism/communism. Collectivism always pulls left because it operates on a leftist foundational principle; that the collective good supersedes the individual good.

What I posted above. Those programs are all expansions on the size of government and the bigger the government gets, the more fraud and waste and idiocy you're going to have.
Always.
If not, what's the example that shows otherwise?
There is some measure of that that it makes sense to employ, such as the infrastructure that you mentioned, but even with a necessary project such as that, you don't think government construction contracts inherently come with waste, fraud, back room deals made in smoke-filled rooms with men twisting their mustaches and laughing like Vincent Price?
So the sane person wants to minimize such things, not expand on them.
