Trump doesn't even have to back out. He just has to stop attacking conservatives that pose a threat to his presidential run. If Desantis decides to run, it won't be because of some "betrayal" of Trump. It will be because Trump has shown he's not the best fit for this country with his actions.
Trump would not be having any issues with 2016 Trump supporters, if he would stop attacking conservatives, and stop promoting the swamp.

There are people that are going to downvote you but this is literally the only way to win in 2024. Trump will never do this unfortunately.
Outside of our tigerdroppings.com bubble, Trump is hated by what is unfortunately a majority of very stupid and loud people. Their hatred is so strong that he will never be elected again. We can either accept that or keep on digging in and watch Gavin Newsome become our dictator or back the winner.

Maybe it's a move to bolster DeSantis by not backing him?
Trump knows that anything he does is going to get attacked by the mainstream. Him going after DeSantis is adding to DeSantis' popularity in a positive way.
The logic is, "If Trump is against him, then he can't be all bad."
IMO, the Republican party still benefits from having Trump out there campaigning. No matter what he does, they will have a better shot at winning in 2024.

If he was willing to compete with Ron (if Ron decided to run) on a substantive level without a "me or burn it all down" approach, I'd be ok with that. But as we've seen from the Trump loyalists on here who are already working around the clock to bring down Ron solely because he might at some point be a threat to Trump - it's not going to happen either.
