Common household applicances:

Because that's the only thing folks buy?

How about ALL the shite we pay for now that they would have no fricking clue how to budget for back in the day? $12/mo Netflix, $25 Sling TV, $80 internet, $250/mo for 4 cell phones, $3/gal gas, etc., etc., etc.

Plus - household appliances aren't shite compared to houses and cars. In 1959 - a house was $16k or $17k and a car was $2500.

Today - you're paying 15x to 20x that for a house, and 12x to 15x for a car. With not even a 10x in hourly wages, you're losing ground on the 2 most costly items and the ones you normally pay over time, with interest.

For the record, the CPI very likely overstates inflation, which obviously impacts real wage data over the decades. Other measurements of inflation show that is has been lower, which means real wages have actually increased by a larger margin.

I live in a pretty average 2br house that was built in the 70's.
It's in an ok neighborhood that borders a warzone in Baton Rouge. I could sell it for well over $200k tomorrow. If I split one of the bedrooms and fixed up the place a little, I could probably get close to $300k for it.

I used to live in a 900sf house that was built in the 30's in a trendier neighborhood in the same town. It had window A/C units, but a similar house down the street sold for almost $400,000

The argument about average home size is a load of malarkey

Thanks for making the point, for the other side

How much did those houses cost back in the 50s and then the 70s? How much of the monthly expenses did it take to own that same house in the 50s and then the 70s.

Posters are saying that you have a smallish house by todays standards, and yet how much of your monthly expenses is it eating up? A single family income probably owned those houses back in the day. Slim chance a single earner is buying that house at 400K today.

You just proved that purchasing for a 30s/70s constructed house eats up way more today in expenses, than it did when constructed. Which proves that a middle class family is worse off now, in order to own the EXACT SAME HOUSE, their parents may have built

*PS - As that war zone expands, that house will lose value rapidly, even further deteriorating the middle class family's worth
