What was America before it evolved into America

To be fair there's a lot of under appreciated American history before Jamestown and the Puritans.
Mainly the Spanish Florida settlements in St Augustine, the Viking settlements in New Brunswick and Greenland, and Native American settlements all over the place.

quote:All "native histories" are no more legit history than if the Western World were to claim "Illiad" and "Oddessy" as history. They are the two seminal works of literature of the greatest civilization the world has ever known, but WE have no need for them to be "history." Through good and bad, the greatness of the white man and his civilization stands on its own. The Illiad and Oddessy were passed down orally for probably hundreds of years before it was penned onto parchment as well, but no one ever made the claim that it was history.
Most native histories are oral and contain a lot of mythology.

Everything you mentioned is taught in elementary, middle school, and high school. If you go through the state curriculum, you'll see that those topics are focused on more than the glorification of America. For example, the 11th grade (US History) curriculum spends an entire unit on westward expansion and focuses on the abuse of Native Americans and Chinese immigrants.

That's ignoring 10,000 years of history before the time of Paul Revere!
History began when the Egyptians and Sumerians began writing things down around 3,100 B.C. Everything before then is archeology and, while fascinating, only gives ideas of what was going on. There was no written history in or about America until Europeans came over- Vikings around 1,000 A.D. and Columbus in 1492.

When I taught at the inner city schools of Baton Rouge I allotted a week and a half for the Olmecs, Incas, Anasazi, Hopewells ,and Aztecs. I even taught about the Natchez Indians .
My students wanted to learn about Malcolm X and MLK, only.

The idea for an united America actually began earlier such as 1754 with Benjamin Franklin's political cartoon:
See the Albany Plan of Union

Hell, slavery was abolished in Mexico before the United States. Curiously, between 1824 and 1836 slavery was illegal in Texas. They fixed that and reinstituted slavery when they won their independence from Mexico.

Back in my youth (while dinosaurs still roamed), we learned a lot of history of this land before the USA was established. Our history lessons started with the Age of Exploration and covered Columbus and settlement by the English, Spanish, French, Dutch. We were taught about the conflicts with the Indians as well as conflicts between European powers which affected the New World. We learned of the conquistadors and their subrogation of Aztecs and Incas.
What we didn't learn, however, was that we, as elementary school students, should feel guilt and shame as to our history.
