When you are under duress --- having been spotted and screamed at, knowing that you are about to die with certainty, and missing the target by an inch or two doesn't seem amateurish.

The people that disagree with you in this thread are people that have never fired a gun, the "Why didn't they just shoot the gun out of his hand like they do in the movies" crowd.

If you shot at a running deer at 250 yards then you are a piece of shite that shouldn’t be allowed to comment. If it was injured from another shot that would be a reasonable explaination, but it’s laughable anyone would act like this is anything close to easy.

What concerns me more is the negligence (or on purpose) leaving that rooftop totally unguarded. I have listened to many experts in this area by now. Something isn’t right about leaving the closest rooftop open with a clear shot at the president.

Not to say, just the time and attention, drawing movement it would take to army crawl from the edge of the roof all the way up to the ridge of the roof. It’s astounding that dude was not put down 5 feet before he made it to the top.

My Pop shot as a member of the All-Army rifle team for years shooting combat rifle/iron sights class. Won a 600 yd. match at Quantico and a 1,000 yd match at Camp Perry .
I asked him if he or anyone on the team was able to see their rounds(bullet) in flight. His reply was you cannot see the round however you CAN see the heat/
vapor trail as the round heads downrange under certain conditions.
This answer came from people who had shot thousands upon thousands of rounds in practice so I might consider the source...

Not really. I've had clean misses on much easier shots.

So admit that hitting a running deer (with a kill shot) at 250 yards is dumb luck?. Good. Because it was.

I think he saw Trump go down and he thought his first shot was on target. From there, the second part of his plan was to kill as many Trump supporters as possible before he was killed. This explains a wide array of shots.

Trump didn’t go down right away though, he lifted his hand to his ear.

The current rumor is this was iron sights and not a magnified scope. That would be pretty dumb. But no magnification at 130 yards is not an easy shot for a head shot. You would have just a couple inches either way to miss.

A 3 power scope at 130 yards still isn’t easy to miss by just 2-3 inches as holding it completely steady on a target that’s moving like trump does talking is simply not easy. Now a scope with a higher power of 7-15x on a normal AR-15 makes this a very doable and repeatable shot. With your normal AR-15 there’s not much recoil and a scope you could follow up shots in just fractions of a second. A follow up when trump raises his hand to his ear would have been very doable.

Considering the miss and the well off the mark follow up shots it does seem likely there was no magnified scope used here.

I am flat getting old now I have had 2 lower back surgeries and 1 neck surgery. My eyes are a lot worse than they were 20- 25 years ago also. But before I started falling apart I could have made that shot from that distance with nothing but iron sights. That’s how big of a breach of security this was. A competent shooter didn’t even need optics to pull off that shot.

I grew up dog hunting and every deer you shot at was hauling arse. This deer was chasing a doe which is more of a lope than a run at full speed. It was a good deer and he's on my gun case in a the form of a beautiful European mount. I guess having used the same Remington bolt in a 30.06 for 40 years years helps one know one's limitations. I can stack them at 200 yards with a rest in bench shooting. Wide open field with a good rest in a shooting house is easy peazy. What do you do; sit within 30 yards of a pile of corn?

Well you must have slow deer in your area, they move faster than f-16s in Alabama when startled.

Any dog hunter knows a rifle is not the choice for running deer.

Not really a moving target. Trump was standing at a podium. Head was moving but also had a pattern looking out front and side to side. Shooter just had to put cross hairs on and wait for head to go pack into the established pattern. Gentle squeeze. The first shot is the only one that mattered. The rest were desperation shots.

The photo was taken on a camera with the shutter speed at 1/8000 sec. I doubt your Pop’s eyes are that good.

30 years ago, there was no such thing as a 3 1/2 inch mag with an x full choke in #1 buckshot. REM 1100 with improved cylinder was good at 40-50 yards. I’m guessing you guys need to shoot more.
