Illinois Gov. vetos minimum wage hike (was to be $15)

He cited the University of Washington study that showed minimum wage hikes to be harmful. Some opponents call that study 'controversial'.

quote:
Rauner said in a veto message Friday that "helping low-income families and individuals get out of poverty is a top priority," but that economic evidence suggests such a big wage hike would hurt workers more than help.
He cited a University of Washington study published this year on the impact of Seattle raising its minimum wage to $13 an hour, as it steps toward $15. That study found the average low-wage worker lost money as employers faced with higher labor costs reduced hours, put off hiring or laid off people. By that study's measures, the hike would cause Illinois low-wage workers to see a net reduction in earnings of $1,500 per year, Rauner said.
The University of Washington study was criticized by some economists and advocates for methodological problems. Other research has found minimum wage increases lift pay without little or no impact on jobs. Advocates said the minimum wage hike could have increased the pay of 2.3 million people in Illinois.

And about 65% of them would be unemployed shortly afterwards

I'm all for getting people out of poverty, but if everyone that is poor obtained middle class employment with a solid salary/solid wages...... wouldn't it wreak havoc on the price level?
Before we get people out of poverty, we need to make sure our economy can increase the amount of goods it offers. Otherwise, Mr. Inflation knocks on the door

Why does a 16 year old working 16-20 hours serving burgers deserve $15 an hour

More importantly, being a cashier at Walmart shouldn't be a career. Should be a stepping stone.

Price controls don't work, ever, whether it's for goods or for labor. Unfortunately, hardly anyone is taught basic economics, so things like a higher minimum wage look appealing.

this is common sense but the left has always been guided by raw emotion rather than reasoning.

Not everyone desires to have a 9-5 career. Sometimes life happens. I'm not for minimum wage increase to $15, but also not arrogant enough to shite on people earning a living by talking down to them.

Those of us in the Book Board's Economics Book Club know this to be precisely true. Henry Hazlitt expounds on this issue at length in Economics in One Lesson (1946), a must-read for those tempted by minimum wage hikes.

I think the only shitting on people that is happening is regarding those who work those types of jobs, for whatever reason, but bitches about not getting the benefits of other jobs without the sacrifices.
You see this at every level no matter the frame of reference. You have people who gets envious of the fruits of hard work coupled with no desire to do the work; just feelings of entitlement.
Be those who cry that they need a living wage, or white collar workers who resent someone who got a promotion after being willing to do every shite assignment. It always happens.
So get that touchy feely shite out of here.

$15 an hour would be catastrophic for young workers and first time employed. Not to mention the parents of those that will have to fork out for car insurance, gas money, Starbucks and whatever else their unemployed kids cant buy for themselves

Lmao. The vast majority of minimum wage literature says that increases in the minimum wage leads to unemployment, yet these idiots say it is controversial. I hope these morons looked at the main study's defense of the minimum wage later comment that stated some of the original methodology was wrong.

I don't know your life experiences nor do you know mine. But the people who I've worked with and who have worked for me over the years aren't looking for a handout. They just want to keep the lights on and provide for their families the best way they can.
So forgive me if I might just have a little compassion for "those people" that work "those types of jobs".
And on a personal note my mom stood on her feet for 30 years as a lowly cashier as some would call her. She enjoyed it and her customers missed her when she retired. She didn't whine or become envious of others. Does that happen, of course but to paint with such a broad brush is wrong.
So get your arrogant entitled bullshite out of here.

Higher min wage has a fairly good chance to lead to higher unemployment. Which do you prefer? Higher employment or higher artificial wages?

Have an upvote. I agree with you totally. Not arguing for a 15/hr min wage. See my first post.

Boston, L.A., S.F., San Jose, Seattle, Portland, etc. will all be $15 an hour in 2 years.
It's called cost of living. If you live in those areas - that's like getting $7 an hour in the Bible belt.

Finally, some common sense coming out of Illinois.

They aren't forced to live there though. I don't live in Miami bc I couldn't afford it. Hence I don't live there.
