BTW, glancing at the document in the link, it seems like TD.com would fall into their definition of social media. Will Chicken just ban IL IP addresses?

IL is also trying to tell private businesses that they can't pass the cost down to consumers

quote:

A social media platform shall not vary the cost of access, features, services, or in-app purchases for any user based on the geographic origin of the user's login, activity, or account registration for the purposes of recouping the fee under this Section.

This seems ripe for fraud by the state of Illinois by abusing free registration to up the tax amount.

Imagine seeing ineffective police, bad infrastructure, and general dysfunction and thinking: “wow, I need to give this government more money.”

More fines

If you read the text, they are going to penalize and fine to death any company that refuses to comply

A small hiking trail app was posting how it will now cost them $165K monthly to stay operating in IL when this takes effect

Going to be real interesting to see the legal gymnastics on how they can possibly enforce this on apps that don’t deal in financial transactions or engage in targeting marketing to people in Illinois.

The State of Illinois doesn’t have super jurisdiction over every company in the country.

I am wondering if an "interstate commerce" argument can be made. They are essentially taxing like if an out of state car came into Illinois.

Every text or tweet is interstate commerce.

Companies get money to pay fines from:

A: sales revenue

B: magic money trees

Now he's put a .2% tax on crypto transactions.

I work remotely for a small business. The owner said he would not consider anyone from Illinois, New York, or California. They are hurting their own people with this nonsense.
