Will lead to higher taxes, because they can.

An equal part of the conservative mantra of low taxes is less spending. Military and entitlements have to be addressed ASAP.

I will ask my banker if he will cut my rates if I am willing to borrow more than I can afford. As a matter of fact, if I were a banker, I might make that my marketing focus.

You can always cut spending elsewhere besides SS.

You really can't, the same goes for Medicare. Let's take FY2023 for example.

Total FY2023 revenue: $4.44T
Total FY2023 debt servicing: $1.025T

This leaves $3.415T in revenues from which to run a balanced budget (notice "balanced", that's before paying down the debt).

Social Security spending for FY2023 was $1.4T. If you sequester that off as "untouchable" then that leaves only $2.015T for the rest of the federal government. If you're wanting to balance the budget, that's a cut to FY2023's total spending of ~61%. Spreading that out equally means cutting the pay of every federal employee and agency (not just Congress and their staffers, but every member of the military, the VA, etc) as well as cutting payments to any bills (electricity and water, for examples).

No one in DC is going to vote to have their own throats cut like that. No one.

The thing is though, cutting Social Security is just as suicidal (at least to any meaningful degree), so nothing will continue to get done because everyone wants the sacrifice to be on someone else.

Sounds like a non functional system. Maybe we do need monarchs over "democracy"

No, I think we first need to recognize that while an individual person may be smart and/or charitable, people (as a group) are dumb and selfish. Whether this means going back to something so strict as "only land-owning Christian males may vote" or something less strict would likely be the next step.

Yep, POTUS Trump did sign those spending bills sent to him by a Democratic congress. After all, POTUS Trump's intentions were to drain the swamp.

POTUS Trump did expose some big spenders then, didn't he?

Himself. He pushed for even more spending in 2019 and 2020 than even many Democrats.

Trump thought we weren't spending enough.

Totally agree.

This war is collective vs the individual.

I dont think its fixable and people are being wired for collective representation. It will get worse.

Thats why the best govt is the smallest, most local govt.

Latest I saw was that interest was about 3% and expected to keep increasing. At $35T in debt, the interest would be a little over $1T. We could be at $38T in debt by the time of the inauguration. 3% of that is $1.14T.

The debt is my single biggest issue. It amazes me that people still vote for Republicans and Democrats.

It blows me away that these guys didnt notice the debt growing until 2021. Republicans are as broken as Democrats on the debt. Keep those stocks inflated.

Now its hot again.

Half still try to explain it as good for this country.
