Classic virtue signaling, because they would become the biggest welfare state of the EU the moment they joined that's why.

Their per capita income is shat in comparison, their country will have to be rebuilt, and whatever funding the EU sends them will be stolen and then they will ask for more. Basically like most inner cities in the US

You do realize this is the central theme of this entire conflict, right?

It's not NATO or Nazis. It's the EU. That's what Russia/Putin fears most.

This is all about forcing Russia into a distracting war, keeping them occupied and using their resources and possibly even cause unrest in the Russia.
The US support was never about Ukraine's freedom. The US did their fair part in baiting Russia into this invasion and it has been in the works for many years.

I think you may envision the EU as being more unified/monolithic than is actually the case.

Right, there's already a significant list of Balkans nations who have been in the queue for EU membership for years and the EU is not eager to give free labor mobility within Europe to them while they're still trying to manage the implications of the Eastern Europeans they have admitted, so 40 million Ukrainians at the moment is a no-go. Many of those EU-candidate nations are NATO members, though, and even those who aren't are part of collective security agreements that the Europeans would likewise move to defend if needed.

Ukraine was on the literal edge of being invited to the EU membership track.

Putin's puppet leader delayed the process until the deadline and then announced they were rejecting the EU in favor of a Russian trade agreement. That's what led to the Maidan Revolution, ousted Yanukovych, and gave the US an opportunity to influence Ukraine's politics. This also led to Russia's first invasion and their seizure of Crimea.

This entire conflict is about the EU. Putin cannot exist in a world where Ukraine is on the path to economic advancement beyond Russia. That's what the EU would do for Ukraine. If Russians wake up one day and Ukraine's economy and SOL is beyond Russia, revolution is on the table.

I understand all the aforementioned, but that did not answer the question, why dont they fast track them into the EU..

Because its better to make certain their economy is stable and let the US run up 100s of billions in debt to defend Ukraine. Once again the EU gets its cake and can eat it as well.

Ukraine labor has been used extensively pre 2014 by nations in the EU. It was also used in Russia pre-2014 for industrial constrution, as in petrochem and refining. Russian labor is shiite.

100's of Billions only if I can could sell a 20 year old used car with 300,000 miles at original book value adjusted for inflation. I cannot even do that with today's high prices for used vehicles.
