re: If the civil war was about slavery, why’d they keep slaves in the North?

Fun fact:
The first colony to make slavery LEGAL was Massachusetts.

Pretty ironic considering the Southern Democrats wanted to keep slavery for cheap labor to work their farms. In 2025, Democrats are going back to their roots, by insisting we keep illegals here to work our farms and provide cheap labor.

The whole slavery thing really gets turned upside down when you realize there were black slave owners. Nobody ever mentions that. Wonder why?

Whatever. The northern states were overwhelmingly anti-slave
Yet they had zero issue getting rich off of southern cotton, no matter how it was grown, in their northern factories.

Illinois, the 'Land of Lincoln" voted down a referendum to allow blacks to vote in 1867.

You know nothing about the Civil War or how the North kept slavery the whole war. When taking over cotton growing areas in the south the northern generals would force labor into the fields to get those green dollars to line their pockets.
Just look up the net worth of the northern generals, before the war and after. Banks, Butler etc.
Then look up how many northern generals still owned slaves to the end of the war.
The issue of what congress blocked that stopped the industrial manufacturing equipment from being sold. The north was saw the south as a giant waiting to happen with slavery in the south.

None of what you said contradicts what I said? The north didn’t fight the war to end slavery. The emancipation proclamation freed exactly zero slaves. Whites in the north, including Lincoln, were super racist…just like whites in the south.
However, the south outlined their reasons for secession for everyone to read. Go read their words and tell me they didn’t secede because they wanted to keep the institution of slavery.

the south succeeded because of slavery
the north went to war to preserve the union.
They then got rid of slavery after

Abolishing slavery also provided the North a nice propaganda narrative to prop up public support of the war because it actually wasn't that popular amongst the people.

Like I said you know nothing of the war, 90% of all southern soldiers did not own slaves.
Read the letters they wrote about why they fought, and it had nothing to do with slavery. It was about their rights, which they saw the federal government as overreaching.
Also, you do know the underground railroad did not stop in the northerns states it went to Canda, this because the northerners were turning the ex-slaves back in to make money.
The war in the north was never popular and they did not see the war as to being to free the slaves. Lincoln was about to lose Maryland and was by 1862 having major issues in New York.
Slavery was wrong and it was the rich of the north and south living off of it. Northern internalist stopped the sell of machinery to the south and this is a major issue of the war.
It is like this the south had no hope of wining the war and once New Orleans was captured by the north there was beyond no hope as near to 70% of the manufacturing in the South was in New Orleans. The Iron ore being mined in Alabama was mainly all shipped to New Orleans.
The largest slave owner in many states like Louisiana was a black woman, there are more free blacks in Louisiana than near the rest of United States and if you include South Carolina, it is far more.
The riots in the north grow until the north had to use an iron hand to control areas like Maryland and New York City. The war by late 1862 is total mess and both sides did not see the war lasting that long.
The war is using tactics far outdated to the weapons on the field of battle.
Just go read all the letters, there are a large number of the soldier letters in the LSU, Tulane, Monroe libraries, you will find the southern soldiers are fighting for rights. The elites want to hold on to slavery, but slavery was dying out in the south already. Once the British start growing cotton in Egypt it would have destroyed the southern slavery issue totally.
Also, another outcome of the war are the camps, the north set up to control the population, the idea of those camps was later used by the British to control the Boers and then later by Germans. We do not know the total number that dead in those camps by the US in the Civil War, those camps held old men, women and children. The British got the idea from the US army and the deaths in those camps are better known and held just like the US camps old men, women and childern.

civil war was not about slavery. that was part of it, but mostly used as propaganda

The Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves only in Confederate states still rebelling as of January 1, 1863.
British newspapers harshly criticized Lincoln for the Emancipation Proclamation.
It was primarily a strategic move—an attempt to incite a slave uprising in the Confederacy, not a sweeping act of liberation.
In practice, it didn’t free a single slave at the time it was issued.
Yet, students today are still taught to see it as a bold and noble gesture.

OP is fake news. When the war ended slavery ended everywhere in the US. It’s like arguing that Hitler actually liked Jews because he let a couple live in Munich or somewhere.

And yet here we are today with the vast majority of blacks still enslaved by the Dem plantation in exchange for some food stamps or a mid level government job. Free is as much a state of mind as physical. They are physically free but mentally beholden to their Dem masters who feed them just enough scraps to keep down a revolt. Sad, really.
