re: If only 1% of fed workers are in the office and gov still works, why push for RTO?

With workers subsidizing their own government jobs by paying their own office overhead, the government saves a fortune on office space, utilities, parking, etc.

As an engineer for the federal government, I would like to say that I go into the office Monday thru Friday every week. We’re not all worthless sacks of crap a lot of us are though unfortunately.

That 1% number can’t be right unless they are specifically talking about fed workers in DC. All of the federal buildings have been empty since COVID it’s a ghost town around the capital building.

We aren’t saving shite LowT. Did you read the link I posted? We are paying to heat and cool MANY vacant buildings, and paying leases and/or additional charges for maintenance and upkeep.

This is what people say but I have worked with people that wfh and it’s simply not true. Not even close.

While I agree that most people are less productive at home than at an office, I absolutely know for a fact that SOME people are more productive at home for several reasons...one being because they are not constantly interrupted at home like they are at the office. Another is because they are already motivated, driven people that don't need "encouragement" to be productive, plus they can manage their personal and work times much more efficiently than most.

That is for the buildings that government owns or for which it has long term leases. Many government operations have gone “off lease.” To bring everyone back into an office, the government procurement folks will be the ones working overtime.

I think they will force a shite load of resignations. I'm convinced thats why big corporations did it.

Tboy chimes in with the "one off" the liberals are so proud of.
Poor Mary who could not get an abortion in XYZ state and almost died
The Trans who nearly died from an infection from holding up pee cause it couldnt go to the bathroom
And now the somewhere, somehow building that is working "off lease"
Which would mean they are paying an exorbitant month to month rent. Try harder Tboy.

Do any of you really think that only 1% of the federal workforce is at work?
Posted on 12/7/24 at 8:08 am to GusAU
Take it from someone who knows, … it takes an exceptionally disciplined individual to be more productive wfh …. and those people are few
Posted on 12/7/24 at 8:13 am to Meauxjeaux
If you aren’t in the office, you aren’t working.
Simple as that.

A good number of those federal employees would do a shitty and lazy job regardless of their actual work location, whether at home or in the office. WFH affords them the opportunity to be even more lazy however. But I have no illusions that their productivity would skyrocket inside an actual office.

In a business you have financial metrics to be judged on. In a government entity, where it's probably a bullshite job to begin with, it is much harder to judge productivity.

You can’t even form a coherent thought. You should be embarrassed by your posting.
The government does not have enough office space to bring everyone into an office. It will require a huge expenditure to outfit offices all over the country with phones, desks, office supplies, carpet, etc, to end all work at home. If you are ignoring that because you don’t like trans people, you should be on stronger meds.

Our agency actually increased production while working from home during COVID. That said, I prefer being in the office

Personally, I don’t think that workers are more productive, or even equally productive, working from home. There are exceptions, of course, but for the most part I would expect the workers to get more done at an office.
But having the workers work from home is certainly a hell of a lot less expensive for the employer. It eliminates almost all of the overhead of an office.

The whole 2 years severance is nuts. Give them 3 to 6 months at best.
Likely two years of severance is needed to entice people to go. They’ll feel like two years is forever.
Three or six months of severance and people won’t take that because they’ll be freaked out about having to find a new job so quickly.

And personally, for what it’s worth, in my opinion, every single job in federal government should have outcome production indicators.
Working from home or working from an office might not matter too much.
But if your job is to push paper, you better show that you’ve pushed 100 papers every day or something similar.
