True, you don't have to be a US citizen, but you DO have to be lawfully in the United States, either as a permanent resident (Green card) or a temporary resident with a valid passport AND an I-94 form.

I would have zero problem if I was late to my destination because the plane was diverted to get even one illegal out of this country.

That seems to defeat the purpose. Your citizenship is permanent, your residency and legal status changes. Thus your Real ID could be bullshite the day after you get it, if you are not a citizen.

Yeah that was just stupid wasting time and money.
Pick him up at his destination is just as good a photo op and probably would be able to arrest whoever was picking him up in the process
