East Germany wouldn't have looked much different.

That said, you'll continue seeing buildings like this as the designs lend well toward contemporary security concerns. Another reason the post 9/11 world went to shite.

This is one of the fruits of materialism.

Compare this with old Europe.

The Canadian Embassy is right off the mall ave it's ugly as hell. The FBI building isn't far.

The Metro is well done, the rest should be bulldozed.

The LSU dental school looks like a soviet era spy HQ. It could be used a stock footage for a movie where bad stuff is happening in a government building.

Brutalist just happened to be the "in" style when these buildings were raised. DC has some very nice areas and I'm glad I moved here.

One of the additional travesties of Brutalist architecture is that it has an insanely high cost of maintenance. The raw concrete has to be treated consistently with a sealant or the building degrades.

Simply put there was a lot of bad architectural movements post WWII. The International Style, was pretty awful as well. Basically utilitarian square boxes, boring as can be. E.g. Seagram building in NYC and the UN building. That style was developed in the 30's but really took hold in the 50's and 60's. At least they used open space and light in those designs.

Luckily there has been some nice work done once we hit the post-modern era. Phillip Johnson and I.M. Pei designed some really iconic and beautiful buildings, like the PPG building in Pittsburgh. But largely modern architecture is really disjointed and bad.

If you want to see the worst of the worst when it come to Brutalism, look no further than the Buffalo City Court Building. No windows, no light just giant slabs of concrete that look like something straight out of Gotham city.

I have associated DC with that type of architecture for a while.

I dislike it immensely, and it clashes with some of the nicer older buildings in the city.

the subway isnt Brutalist Architecture. It is like that for its structural efficiency. Read up on the Pantheon and how it was designed.

They have been avoiding maintenance to the facade of the Hoover building for a long time. Chunks of concrete have been breaking off.

The FBI really wants a new building. I sort of hope that Trump moves them out of DC to Detroit, Cleveland, or Buffalo.
