On a topic about schools in New York, I posted this:

quote:

This is why I support school choice, it should be up to the parents of each kid to send them where they feel is the best place to send them. Get the governments and bureaucrats out of it.

Heavily downvoted.

Also in a comment section I saw a Christian being attacked for being against gay marriage, and the liberal atheist hivemind attacked him. One poster was attacking him for eating shellfish because apparently that against mosaic in the old testament and therefore a sin.

I replied that Jesus's death fulfilled mosaic law and in the new covenant we are no longer under mosaic laws in the old testament. I was viciously attacked, downvoted, and got a lot of private messages verbally attacking me like a bunch of angry hyenas fighting over a zebra carcass. These people were really angry at me as if I had committed the Sandy Hook shootings. Telling me that I should do a better job at reading my "2000 year old fairytale book". A lot of "tolerance" they were showing.

I can't stand when atheists try to use scripture as a weapon to point out Christians as hypocrites when they don't even know the contexts of the scripture they are using.

EVEN assuming your statement to be 100% factually true, it's still a massive improvement over DU or Reddit

okay.

this is still an echo chamber cesspool, maybe not quite as bad as other echo chamber cesspools, but that's doesn't make it a place that welcomes open and honest debate.

You realize they say that about the South, right? And the West and Northeast have most of the money so if one of the two is right, who do you think it would be?

i always make threads to welcome honest debate from those who don't agree with me, and the ones that would be "right wing" in your mind are almost always ignored. i even interject my threads in NEW threads when opponents are arguing the points of my thread...still ignored

Good for you. Hard to tell, but I mean that in a non-sarcastic way.

Now how about you figure out why td.com's poli board is such a conservative echo chamber cesspool?

Cause it's an SEC football site that happens to have political talk forum.

I would guess the Reed College Alumni forum would tend to the left in a similar way.

Well why don't you give us a few examples of poli sites that aren't cesspools and we can check out what it's like, you know all this wallowing around in a cesspool with you.

just speaking from experience, even when that does happen those threads are pretty quickly overrun by the far right wing mass that populates this board, who gang up on anyone even a single step to to the left of of Paul Ryan with the quickness and make it impossible to have a real discussion.

hell most of those threads don't make it to page 2 without me pumping life into them. a meme has developed with lots of responses and/or ones alluding to the fact that opponents will avoid the thread

There is a lot of hivemind there, but they are usually willing to engage in honest debate with folks of all stripes with earnest questions/viewpoints.

I find this board to actually be a pretty good one despite the lack of diversity of thought. If you are hypocritical in your opinions, you will be challenged. If you are illogical, incorrect, unfounded, bigoted, generalizing, trolling, insane, or otherwise posting a lack of substance, you will he challenged and ridiculed. The liberal posters often accuse the conservative posters of being stubborn, arrogant, and stupid, but i find that when the liberal minded posters put their assumptions aside and enter threads with the desire to enter into spirited, respectful, and informative debates, i'm often impressed at the breadth of conversation and civility of those debates. Even when we give each other a hard time, when we actually treat each other with repect as intelligent individuals who disagree rather than some evil or moronic enemy that must be defeated, we learn so much more about ourselves, our positions, each other, and the world around us. There's no reason we can't be civil...

i think i auto-filter the most dogmatic crap on both/all sides.

also--and i can obviously speak for myself only--more than half of my close friends are to the left of me (although I increasingly reject directional metaphors), so I tend to scrutinize the left's positions more just to keep myself in check. and i dismiss out of hand idiotic "far right" positions, so i don't even entertain posts in that vein.

all that said, i can see that a more liberal poster, looking for objective conversation, would have a hard time here. hell, i get jumped often trying to AGREE with people.

I completely agree. We did have a thread give us, for a few pages, a good discussion about Chomsky's anarchism which turned a few preconceptions on it's head, but it's still the most effective way to communicate the general cultural and political divide our country still experiences.
