has become a democrat/republican thing. ive even seen posts on other sites from Dem business owners saying they would rather lose their business than open early. i just don't get how this specific topic has become political.

Tribalism is the natural state of human affairs.

It isn't any more complicated than that.

The left in America successfully destroyed the "American" tribe (to which we all belonged, not all that long ago) and put everyone into discrete little voting herds, by selectively buying influence with the corrupt leaders of those herds.

And, so now, it is not what is good for America, it is what hurts the other side. At least from one side, that is the sole analysis.

Reagan said it best. The left would rather live on their knees than die on their feet.

OK, if you want to throw political motives out of it I would say it goes back to the nature of conservatives and liberals. People on the left are easily frightened. I observe the rhetoric in news interviews and quotes in print. It's amazing how many times Dems say 'I am really scared about x.' or 'X really frightens me' or 'I'm frightened to think what might happen because of X.'

People on the right just don't use the same language.

This trait is what causes easily frightened people to drift left because they want govt to protect them. People on the right don't feel an anxiety about living to the point of turning to govt.

Most liberals I know are mentally challenged when it comes to business and economics.

If a business owner wants to detroy their business or go out of business, more power to them. They sure as hell are not millionaire business owners.

The rich liberals only care about their money just like rich people on the right.

The longer we are shut down, the worse it is for Trump.

That's all it is, on both sides.

It seems to be a feature of the politicization of the threat itself, likely due to coverage in the fragmented media-spheres. Look at the state-by-state polling for answers of "yes" to "are you extremely concerned by the threat of the coronavirus?" back to late February before we knew we had any community-acquired cases.

Interesting graph. This is evidence to support what many of us already suspected:

Democrats are afraid of the risks in life, afraid of failure, afraid in general and wish for the safety net of government and a nanny state to set their fragile state at ease.

Republicans value independence, the liberty to take risks and the ability to take care of one's self. To be self-sufficient is very important to most people who identify as republican. They do not want to rely on government at all and believe a nanny state leads to a weak citizenry, therefore a weak country.

It is the basis of most of the chasm between the two ideologies.

Very interesting graph. I think one of the things it shows is that people are more concerned about being right that almost anything else. People would have the whole world go up in smoke just to be able to say “I told you so”

Liberalism is more Feminine, Conservatism is more Masculine.

Women tend to be risk averse and often are happy to be tied to the nest, men tend to seek out risk.

Do you have a link to that graph? I'd like to see which states compare to each other.

There are major differences in the coalitions, for sure. But the signalling of leadership really matters. If you see the inflection point on the graph of March 11, that's where Trump gives his oval office address announcing restriction of flights from Europe. But the Republican coalition was getting a lot of mixed messages from its trusted media & political authorities (and still is).

Everything is political...if the Reps are FOR something, then the Dems are against it....and vice versa.....it does not matter what the subject is.....if the Reps wanted to give everyone $1000 a month, the Dems would hate the idea (even tho the idea came from them)

Being locked down supports the DEM movement of Big Government and everyone being dependent on the government tit. Besides most libs probably get more on unemployment than making coffee at Starbucks or whatever shite job their arts degree landed them
