The New York prosecutor wants to see those returns, because tax returns are a veritable treasure trove of investigative leads On matters totally unrelated to taxation.

BUT, the D.A. needs probable cause. To date, all he has stated is that there were media reports that Trump may have done something wrong. THAT is a complete f*cking joke and does not constitute probable cause -- ESPECIALLY where we are talking about a President who has been lied about constantly by the propaganda wing of the DNC. Given his statements both publicly and in court documents, the Manhattan D.A. is clearly on a politicized witch hunt and fishing expedition which is why Trump should sue him civilly so that he is required to show the probable cause he had BEFORE he got access to Trump's tax returns.

Trump is not suing the prosecutor, because his lawyers have explained that he would have his arse handed to him on a near-instantaneous Motion to Dismiss.

I think he enjoyed enough of those over the last four months.

You/we shouldn't be shocked at how Trump is fair game without regard to the law. If we the people have learned anything the past 10-15 years is that Swampers in good standing have a completely different set of rules than the underclass.

Tim O'Brien was the Trump biographer and was sued by Trump. Trump lost that suit and was required to give his tax returns to Tim's lawyers which allowed him to see them legally.

I'm still fuzzy on why they needed his federal tax returns, other than to go fishing. From the article:

quote:

And if there are email and notes and other records of communication about what they intended to do when they inflated the value of buildings so they could get loans against them and then turned around and deflated the value of the buildings so they could pay lower taxes on them, and there's a communication around that that predates any of these tax entries, that is gold for a prosecutor.

A bank will likely ask for tax returns to verify income and judge the ability of the borrower to repay the loan, but tax returns are a horrible place to look to determine the fair market value of a piece of real estate.

"Value" is such a nebulous term outside of book and tax accounting, which is largely based on what you paid for a piece of real property.

People contest tax values all the time.

This is yet another liberal hit piece article with too few details and not enough facts to string together a coherent argument.

As a prime example, a valuation of a building for loan purposes might include the value of future income streams, discounted at a subjective discount rate, while a property tax value might be based on comparable properties that sold recently.

The investigation smells like a dead fish.

No doubt. I guess the only problem with that is you need probable cause.

From the articles I've read, there seems to be no probable cause. Ergo, you don't get to just go fishing for the needle in the haystack.

Sound familiar?

That journalist is full of shite. He would not have the foggiest clue how to read Trump's tax returns as well as that D.A.

The folks who present this argument are usually the same people who insist that Trump’s returns are far too complicated to be understood by the teams of forensic accountants working for the prosecution.

EDIT: the preceding poster and I were clearly typing at the same time. Hilarious.

It's funny you say that. My masters of taxation program in grad school was a joint program between the business school and the law school.

The most dropouts from the program were law school students. Because they sucked at numbers.

This sounds like a story outlying why tax codes should be simplified.

If I man pays an army of accountants millions of dollars to correctly file his taxes... and they faile...

It’s an indication the tax code is too complex.

So, Mueller looked at his taxes for 3 years and did nothing. Some lackey at the IRS leaked Trump's taxes to the NYT and parts were released. Now, we're supposed to believe that this journalist has looked at them and found something Mueller and the NY Times couldn't?

Again, this is stupid. If anything is found, it's the irs' fault for allowing it. Trump has been clear about this from day 1. The irs is all over rich people, constantly auditing them. They don't miss much and if they do, that's their own fault

So does New York drop the hammer now and try to put trump behind bars, or do they wait until the next election cycle that he would run for office in?
