How would you secure the border and handle this crisis?

Start by deterrence. Once word spreads that you're in a detention center for 3+ months only to be deported immediately following the detention, it may deter a good portion of those willing to brave the desert. First time, 3 months. Second time caught, a year. Third time, shark tank.

As it stands now, come one come all and you'll be released into the community with a promise to appear? wtf.

You simply have to reduce the reward factor attached to sneaking in illegally. If it becomes impossible to secure employment or state provided benefits then few make the effort to sneak across.

Difficult, but with even an ounce of effort it could be done much more effectively than it is now. There are several aspects to the border that need to be addressed:

1. What draws these immigrants here?
2. Why do they not use the legal option?
3. How can we physically keep them out?
4. How can such a physically barrier be monitored and enforced?
5. How do we pay for it?

Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If you eliminate the free government benefits, eliminate their ability to undercut the minimum wage, and make it easier for them to come legally, you can quickly stem the vast majority of the tide of illegal immigrants. However, it is infinitely more difficult to enforce those things if the physical barriers are not enforced or put in place.

I'd say it is very difficult given that there's been an immigration problem over the Mexican border for 30-40 years now.

I think a much better approach is tackling the problems that create the demand for immigrants. Go after businesses that utilize illegal labor more aggressively, provide a path to citizenship for those already here, and provide a path to citizenship that wish to come here for work.

Wrong. Landmines have worked for nearly 100 years. Absolutely proven to do the job.

Yet they are receiving them. Go to an area with a large illegal immigrant community. You will see them living in Section 8 housing, sitting in line at the Emergency Room receiving medical care without charge, their children in public schools, ect. They often manage to even get SNAP benefits and Welfare with phony SSI cards, get driver's licenses, and vote in elections, all while not paying property, income, or payroll taxes. That's a fiscal issue one in addition to a security one.

Easily done with what it will cost to welcome the new Obama electorate coming across the border.

Shrinking pie...expanding, competing and desperate interest moving in. Not rocket science.

1)Build wall
2)Place turrets with bean bags and less than lethal
3)Turret control on website for anyone to log into
4)Play shoot em game
5)Problem solved

harsh prison sentences for people who knowingly hire illegals - and cooperative deals with the people they exploit for their testimony.

Don't know but stationing the border patrol forty miles from the border doesn't work.

little shocked this is coming from you.

Do you mind expanding on your position. While I am not in total disagreement, would we not be better off having them working? They will get money from the govt free would they not? WHy not have them work. The business owners are not the ones letting them in

So, you're saying Bush welcomed them in to elect Obama? Was Bush that big a fan of Obama? Did Bush vote for Obama?

THe only reason they come here is because they know they can find work. I don't blame them. I blame their exploiters.

Pretty much no. The idea that most illegals come here and hop on government assistance is really just false.

You seriously underestimate the resourcefulness of a Mexican trying to cross the border.
