When I turned 18 my parents took me to register democrat. That's what you did in northeast Louisiana in those days. I dug into the history of the two parties and didn't like what I found. I went back up there alone a month or so later to change my political affiliation. The lady behind the counter balked and talked me into going as an independent. I never told my parents that I changed.

To the guy that claimed we have Trump because of Obama's color. You sir are a total dumbass. That has absolutely nothing to do with it. It's maddening that people actually think that way. So fricking stupid.

Honestly I believe that welfare should be for the elderly, handicap, or those that need it....

Someone who just isn't working should not get any government benefits

I’m active duty military and truly became a democrat after my 3 tours in the pentagon directly working on the budget and my tours overseas with I had direct observation of our foreign policy (I’m actually typing this from Iraq as we speak).

I saw firsthand the disingenuous approach republicans took with shaping public opinion on their “financial support” with the military. I watch the comments they made on the news which was in direct contrast to the meetings we were having with the professional staffers and HASC/SASC staffers.

Trust me, as they like to champion their troop pay increases as a win for us, it comes at a cost...

Additionally, I’ve done tours in Middle East, Korea, and Europe. Was enlisted then earned a commission so I’ve seen it through various angles. All of that have formed my political leanings.

I grew up in Deep South Louisiana so I understand the lens through which so many view the country and Lean red in their political leanings. I don’t judge them for their beliefs because they make their political decisions on what they know and see.

You used to believe that welfare should be for poor college students.

Additionally I would be more than happy to answer questions on my experiences. Just not interested in sly “oh you on the left you are weak” attacks... that’s just not worth wasting time responding to...

Hence, why i've changed.... I do believe the tuition as a whole is more than it should be. Yet I think people go into degrees that don't pay a lot/not much of need then bitch about the cost of school

Small business owners were the breadwinners in my family. My grandmother especially hated government and the Clintons. Republicans lost me with the Christian conservatives but I’ve just found my true safe space with libertarianism. Both R and are full of shite IMV. although dems turned it into an art form.

I did not. Integrity is a big thing for me. That’s where the republicans lost me during my time working in the budget. I never found her to have much integrity.

I also did not vote for trump. As a Democrat I would have voted for Jon Huntsman had he been at the top of a ticket

You only changed bc you think it benefited you.

When the people find that they can vote themselves money that will herald the end of the republic.

Your simple-mindedness is part of the problem. No real principles.

People's main complaint about Obama: He wants healthcare for everyone and his wife wants our school children to eat healthier.

Step back and think about which side you are on.

And now we have Trump thanks to people's true feelings about a black president come out.

It's pretty simple.

Edit: FWIW the only money I ever received from the government was on a tax return or when I served in the military.

Smh, see how fast he went to identity politics.

People like this is why I lean right, but remain unaffiliated to any party.

Main complaints about Obama. Redistribution of wealth. Weak diplomacy. Iran Nuclear deal. Identity politics. Obamacare was a tax.

Stay away from CNN and think for yourself. Btw that doesn't mean watch Fox either.

I read the constitution and interpreted its words literally.
Then, I took the issues we face as a nation and traced them backwards to government policies to find that every single one of those policies stemmed from interpreting powers that could not be found by reading the document’s literal meaning.

Just living life as an average middle class male and life experiences molded my opinions. Swing voting independent who has voted republican and Democratic in my decade of voting. Socially liberal, not necessarily an advocate but stemming from apathy. I don’t care if gays get marriage benefits (last rights and other legal stuff) - it’s just a piece of paper. I wish weed was taxed and regulated like alcohol but don’t wish to see anything past that even brought up. Abortion is my iffy area but it’s not an issue that would sway my vote. Over time I’ve realized it’s just a talking point for the R’s but they know they’ll never do anything about it, it’s a moot issue. I also support CHiP and children’s health insurance programs because I care about children in and outside of the womb. I personally would not support a girl I knocked up getting an abortion but I’m not going to interfere with anybody else’s decision. I support tighter vetting with visas, tighter border security, and a strong military. I also don’t believe trickle down economics works when in practice despite what it looks like on paper but also believe that socialism and communism are bull shite. 2nd amendment supporter and gun(s) owner. Transgenderism is a mental disorder than needs to be addressed, not glorified. Am i missing any major talking points?

Basic Economics by Thomas Sowell
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand

Those two books did more for me than any books I’ve ever read.

They completely opened my eyes to free exchange of goods and services between individuals and how man has every right to pursue his own self-interests rather than society/government forcing him to live for the sake of others.
