DeFord Bailey has been forgotten.

He used to tour with Roy Acuff and Bill Monroe.

When Bailey died, Bill Monroe strongly advocated him to be in the country music hall of fame but no one listened.

Why aren't the media talking about the harmonica wizard?

It was known as hill music in the 1920s.

Then the cowboy craze found Nashville.

Then the pedal steel guitar introduced from Hawaii and the ball really got going.

It’s not like black people weren’t connected to country music. Why shouldn’t they be given credit for their contributions to the genre?

Ken Burns “Country” documentary is fantastic. Country music in America does have some roots in black culture.

Back then it was considered taboo in the black community to buy and listen to country music.

"Black harmonica player DeFord Bailey was the first performer on the Grand Ole Opry and helped turn Nashville into a country music mecca."

The Google machine says that fiddler Uncle Jimmy Thompson was the very first performer on the Grand Ole Opry.
Hmmm... somebody is lying.

Katrina, 2005, the natives looted the Walmart at the end of Tchop. The only thing left in the store was a pile of country music CDs. They even took the racks the CDs were on.

The Black contribution is more on the blues guitar that can be found in certain segments of country music because a lot of the white stars of early country music were poor Southerners who absolutely gleaned some influence from Delta Blues types.Along with the banjo. But then there was the Native American influence by way of the Appalachian people. It's main influence though is Scotch Irish. So much so that if you went to pubs in Ireland you might think you were in a Nashville club. Steve Earle brings in a lot of that influence.

You also cannot discount the Mexican influence that popped up out of Texas and in the Bakersfield sound and guys like Marty Robbins.

Old country music in the lyrics had a lot in common with blues guys. Michael Berry has said on more than one ocassion that country music was white working class blues .
