I’d vote for a gas tax if they included a provision that ONLY out-of-state contractors could perform the work.

They saw Gov. Meemaw (R) railroad the citizens of Alabama and figured it would work there as well.

Seems reasonable with how well our state manages money.

But with their bill, 8 cents will be dedicated back to the roads by 2025.

LINK
quote:

It has been thirty years since state lawmakers have passed a major reform and investment package for Louisiana’s roads and bridges. Over that period, rising costs have eroded the value of the fuel tax while DOTD’s operating budget has also been allowed to grow each year. This bill ensures 8 cents of taxpayers existing fuel tax are invested back into road and bridge preservation and construction by 2025.

Central to the coalition’s proposal is the utilization of the new “Construction Subfund” (lockbox) of the Transportation Trust Fund. The “lockbox” ensures dollars deposited in the “lockbox” go directly to projects. Voters approved this constitutional amendment in 2017, protecting highway dollars from any DOTD employee costs.

So I guess it's a step forward but why would taxpayers believe it when apparently less than 8 cents of the 20 cents collected is spent on roads/bridges?

How about you show some progress on actually keeping the money you collect and it being spent on actual road repair and construction instead of raising taxes and saying "Trust us this time."

This Rant is right. I served in the Senate 8 years, 30 years ago. We passed a 5% gas tax just for roads. The Liberals, Unions. and Democrat city gov'ts Changed the bulk of the taxes to city buses, city sidewalks, bike trails,New Orleans city projects and bus employees, highway employees payroll and state retirement, etc. Not for the Highways. I don't trust the taxes going for Highways at all, I saw it change and the lies behind it. That was the first time I saw gov't people lie about things, now it's normal from some.

So the head of the Coalition to Fix Our Roads, who also happens to be the Executive Director of the Louisiana Asphalt Pavement Association, wants to raise our taxes to fix our roads.

Florida also has no state income tax at the personal level. Most states will give you some leeway. Louisiana is such a corrupt shithole filled with the worst politicians possible, so they will tax citizens whenever and wherever possible.

If we don't pass something, with appropriate safeguards and lockboxes or whatever, then nothing will get built. Just a fact.

Lol we dont do environmental surveys to study the impact of a sub species of African bullfrogs. And Florida has a broad open records law so feel free to request bids, awards, etc. so you can verify my info.

The irony is that I would bet if you could guarantee the money would go 100% for road improvements, the citizens of Louisiana would approve an increase in the gas tax.

Just look at how many cops line our interstate system looking to raise money for whatever shithole they’re located. This is just another desperate money grab by a dying state

Everyone bitches about the infrastructure and traffic around Baton Rouge but refuse to pay a little more to get it.

Things cost money folks. If you want nice things, pay for it. Otherwise stfu
