I have a friend with a nice job working for the CDC. He works from home. His daily schedule:
8:00. Morning meeting 30 minutes.
8:30 - 10:30 work.
10:30 - 4:00 Run errands, work out, walk the dog, cook dinner.
4:00 -4:15 Afternoon meeting which ends his day.
He makes 6 figures.

Just looked it up.
Federal building leases—$6.1 Billion.
Federal employee salaries—$271 Billion.
It's not close, and I knew it wouldn't be.

And why can't these be done in the office? You do realize that a lot of gov employees have offices and don't work in a cubicle don't you? These gov buildings are massive and there are a lot of them.

And you would also know from Google that most of that (60%) is DOD, VA and DHS.
Sure as shite could get rid off all that wasteful spending and shitty employees.
Then remove the other stupid agencies...and boom...mean lean and competent work force that can work from home unless they need a physical location to actually perform their job!

This comparison doesn't take into account. Maintenance costs, Utilities, Insurance, infrastructure etc.
Also you're comparing that to every gov employee salary.

My guess is that you could get rid of 80% of all federal employees and the average American would never know that they were gone.

Its not just the savings on buildings or the cost of the employee................................its all the money the "disperse" to the 1.5 million NGOs and other nonsense.

because you know, and we know, that that person is mowing the grass, playing golf, fishing, whatever, part of the time they should be working.
If you have effective management and teams, a person wouldn’t be able to go do those other things because their is a high likelihood of getting caught if you aren’t participating in the team on a daily basis. For my job I have to be in the office for the most part because I need near daily access to our large format plotters for my maps. My office is split between Rolla, MO and Denver so our communication is near constant throughout the day online. We just have ensure everyone knows each other’s schedules making it pretty hard to duck out to mow the lawn

I am a retired contractor for the DOE. Retired in 2016.
Back in 94 we had a "touch your desk policy". As long as you came in and touched your desk in the morning and again in the afternoon, you were good. We also had a 2-drink limit for lunch.
Then long before Covid we had a work from home option via Citrix. Worked a "4/90" work schedule, if I remember correctly. Which is where we would be in the office for a 9-hour day, with every other Friday off. I took the "work" from home option on those alternate Fridays.
Log in, in the morning. Check a few emails throughout the day and all was good. Plus, every holiday you can imagine off with 5 weeks paid vacation and another 40 hours personal time on top of that. Usually cashed out most of that time.
I had worked over 10 years in the private sector before getting this sweet gig. Can't tell you how many times I showed up on MLK Day, because I had forgotten it was a holiday.
The stories I could tell of wasted taxpayer dollars, even way back then would curl your toes.
Most people on this project, had never worked a regular job and even with all of that, still found things to bitch about.
Hard to believe looking back.
ETA: And that was as a Contractor. When I started in 94 we had 1700 Operations and Maintenace employees and 500 Feds. When I left in 2016 after we had multiple RIF over the years and were down to about 700 Contractors and still had those 500 do nothing Feds, including the totally worthless SES guys.
This was the SPR.
Geaux DOGE!!!

I worked at the State Department and lasted a year and a half. The wasted tax dollars by sandbagging employees will infuriate you. We need DOGE very badly.

I'll bet you can puzzle it out if you think about it real hard. Here's a clue from your post: quote: What about people that work...all day
You guys really have zero clue about shite other than your own job.
It’s very easy to measure productivity when your role produces output. If you are working on budgets and forecasts, or if you create assets for websites, mailers, whatever.
The person at a counter with a bad attitude probably isn’t held to a thruput number. And most states are starting to offer kiosks for most tasks some low-iq counter worker can do.

I used to work for the Federal government. The amount of incompetent people who work in government offices is staggering.
DEI has been around for a lot longer than DEI has been a thing.
The amount of waste by the government is just unbelievable. If you knew how much money you paid in taxes to push pride month and black history month and the rest of that crap. You would freak out.
The number of "Hank Johnson/Sheila Jackson Lee" levels of intelligence you find in a federal office is so sad, you almost have to laugh to keep from crying. We used to say that 10% of workers carried the other 90%.
There are more unqualified people making six figures working for the federal government, than any other sector in America.
Once they get past their probationary period, they are nearly impossible to fire. A black woman is absolutely untouchable, no matter how incompetent or outrageous their behavior.

I guess some people just have better work ethics than others. That's one of the ways to see one of someone's true character aspects. People who try to get away with as much as they can prolly don't do much work while in the office either... just kinda shitty employees.
I can't work from home much. I find way too many ways to goof off myself..

This whole work from home fiasco is only a big deal because of Elon’s experience with Twitter
I think non-government has issues as well. We live in a WFH era where the average lady can make a living selling average pictures and videos of herself to simps…
