For the first time in over 40 years, in 2021 The IRS owed me money, instead of me having to send them a check, or having to work out a payment schedule. They sent me a letter saying that they suspected that my return was fraudulent. After trying and failing to resolve the issue online and by phone, I spent 4 hours on the phone with 7 different people on Tuesday, I got the appointment scheduled for this morning. I had to wear a mask to enter their office.
Then, after presenting all paperwork and letters from them and all kinds of identification going back 40 years, they said that they will send it in and maybe I will get verified in about 9 weeks, or they will send me another letter.
It cost me about 50 bucks worth of fuel, just to drive down there and back

These people have lots of weapons and the power to ruin anyone’s life by fiat. Fun times.

This would not have been even a potential issue if we had the FairTax.

Been there a few times, and we're already having thunderstorms today, and I always have Kaw Liga as my imaginary background soundtrack.

As my accountant told: 'I deal with IRS on the phone a lot and many of them have a problem with simple math.'

Auggie, my condolences on your experience.
I think that this is the beginning of a totalitarian nightmare.
I hope that the slim Republican majority in the House will have the stones to stop this BS

Is this sarcasm? Because, I bet it's a common thing that people have less income when they get older.

It takes a special person to rush to the defense of the IRS after reading all of that op.

I have a funny story about that

My first year out of school, I went from never making any money to about $130,000.

They took all the taxes out twice a month for my check. Never had any issues.

Come income tax refund time, NOW they want me to answer these questions to verify my identity, like how old my grandmother was or which of the following 5 addresses had I lived at in the last 5 years…

They didn’t have any trouble verifying my identity nor were they interested if I was who I said I was, to tax me out the arsehole but only then needed verification for me to get my money back that I had overpaid

Frick the IRS with a hot poker
