This wouldn't happen under Biden, but possibly if Trump or DeSantis are in power. Should we consider trying to diplomatically aquire that mass of land from Denmark even if it is covered in ice. It has to have untapped resources and key military/defense positions.

So then we should establish some separatists there that we can “support” like Putin has.

Trump joked/was kind of serious about acquiring Greenland from Denmark. They said no.

Too much territory requires resources to defend, etc. Greenland is a socialist paradise, though.

How many military assets does Denmark really have defending Greenland?

None. The USA is essentially defending Greenland already. Denmark depends completely on the American military for its own defense. I'm not saying we have to take over Greenland. But America should be able to use it as needed for resources and strategic military defense.

My understanding is that Denmark has had financial problems for some time and that Greenland is a drain on their economy. Trump floated the idea out there of the USA acquiring the island. The media of course blew up in opposition.

Sewards Folly guy eh? Greenland has valuable mineral resources and is strategically located. Thus Thule AFB. If they would sell then buy.

Denmark is a NATO ally and we already have defense installations on Greenland. Why would we have to take it from them?

Trumpic types will have that place GREEN by midcentury, with their gluttony with fossil fuels.

We already have bases in the UK and Iceland, so Greenland would be redundant; however, if war broke out and we really needed it, I'm sure we'd just use it and tell Denmark to pound sand. I just can't see a scenario where we'd need it. The only enemy that we have that can really field a blue water navy is China. If we were at war with them, they'd have their hands too full with our Pacific Fleet to be messing around in the North Atlantic.

As of 2009 Greenlandic independence is possible at any time based on Danish law; with Greenland Home Rule, elected leaders decide most internal affairs.

Denmark controls foreign affairs and guards sea borders, while the United States controls external defense; while the latter cannot increase its presence without consent from Denmark and Greenland, under the 1951 agreement it pays no rent for bases, and has almost complete authority within "defense areas" Denmark and the United States agree to within NATO. American forces and civilians have free access to and between defense areas, and can freely fly over the island; Denmark has little ability to act in Greenland where United States national security is involved. The American presence benefits Danish civil authority over the island, however, and allows the country to spend less on NATO while avoiding having foreign troops on Danish soil.

Greenlandic governments have stated their intention to join NATO as an independent country, welcome increasing United States interest, and do not oppose the American presence if the island benefits from United States investments in jobs and infrastructure.

There was no reason to mock trump over possible acquisition of Greenland. All Americans, regardless of political sides, should have at least considered it.
