He's 100% wrong about this. Which was confirmed recently when California challenged Trump on this same issue.

Governors have sole authority to deploy their state's national guard?

Someone should let all those NG units that got deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq that Bush and Obama had no authority to deploy them then

Yes, he is. His overreaching convoluted anti Trump partisan comment is Gov Wes Moore trying to gain national political favor -because locally he isn't a good Governor.

George Clooney endorsed him for Dem President in 2028, essentially saying his quals are he is an articulate black man (as compared to the ignoramus Cory Booker's?) Clooney endorsed Wes Moore saying he was Governor during the bridge collapse.

Weak sauce...

Man I bet Gavin Newsom feels pretty dumb for not thinking of this a month ago.

It's true and false. Governors don't have the sole authority, but the President does not necessarily have full authority. Certain conditions have to be met like situations involving emergency like natural disasters and civil unrest or an armed conflict like Iraq or Afghanistan.

President's cannot say, I need your national guard....just because.

I think he just doesn’t want to get thrown in the briar patch. I’m probably giving him to much credit to be that smart.

If I were a democrat mayor I would “dare” Trump to send troops/feds to clean up my city. It’s a win-win. Use government resources to clean up the city while you scream about Trump’s overreach.

Posse Comitatus does not cover the national guard, thats why he is using them.

Regarding LA and the Marines, it could be considered an invasion and defending the country could easily be argued.

Not the same issue. The California problem was argued as an invasion with the Insurrection Act.

Wes Moore being a dipshit is both factual and irrelevant to the point.

DC has its own National Guard and guess to whom it reports?

yeah that's great. But we're not talking about the DC NG.

The Posse Comitatus Act

Largely irrelevant in this specific instance. Without certain specific reasons (Insurrection Act, Congressional approval, protection of federal properties &/or emergency declaration), the President can't deploy the DC guard for arresting civilians in a normal way. They can, however, arrest them as part of their duties in guarding federal properties and they can hold them while waiting on the local PD to arrest them.

When we're talking about Trump federalizing the Maryland NG, yes.....it is very relevant. Federalized NG cannot act as civilian law enforcement.

The “national” part should have been his first clue.

We should be as what's been mobilized has been the DC Guard.

The point though is that Trump's not reliant on Maryland's National Guard, so Moore's attempt at defiant glory was largely useless rhetorical masturbation.

But they can support them, which is what they are doing now via such things as crowd management, perimeter control, and communications support. They are also able to establish a visible presence to deter crime or unrest without directly enforcing laws. While they can't arrest, they can temporarily detain people until civilian law enforcement arrives.

This assistance of 800 Guard members (which is, non-coincidentally, the amount of officers the DC PD is short) frees up a lot more officers to do those enforcement duties which the Guard members cannot. This would be akin to New Orleans getting another ~600 officers (ie: bringing staffing up to fill vacancies) because Landry sent 600 LA NG there.

The 'Sanctuary' Cities that don't take violent criminals off the streets will draw refugees from the Cities that do. And hell will break loose. Given Trump's action, people like this supposed 'leader' guy are painted into a corner and it will be inevitable that Rule of Law will be enforced, Muh Racism nws.

But we aren't. Because this thread is about the Maryland NG. It's in the title.

I agree.
