Shares of Expedia and TripAdvisor plummeted Thursday after the travel booking sites disappointed Wall Street with weak third-quarter results, with both citing Google’s search algorithms for their earnings misses.

Why?

Because Google got into the travel business.

Both stocks were down sharply in Thursday trading. Expedia shares dropped a whopping 27.4 percent while TripAdvisor fell by 22.4 percent.

Google has long faced accusations that it engages in anti-competitive behavior by prioritizing its own services in its search results. The consumer review site Yelp recently said that Google’s business practices not only hurt competitors but also consumers by depriving them of choice.

You don't think having a market share of 88.61 percent is borderline monopolistic?

ETA: I am a free market guy but don't deny that they pretty much control the internet.

Its saying Google doesnt show the "best product" on purpose. They make their own product rise to top of search results

If you’d like you product or price to be known to anyone, please remit the mandatory 25 dollar fee to Google.

It doesn’t take a wild imagination to see that total control of the tech sector is a bad thing.

Are more people using Google or individual airline and hotel brand sites for booking? To me, it seems like the latter stepping up their game of late has done more to hurt these consolidator type sites.

Because we all know ideology is based solely on the amount of guns you own. I have a far left fiscal governor that thinks it’s ok to own guns.

oh 100%

it's usually the same rate (sometimes lower) and you get to deal directly with the airline (or hotel). you try to change a hotels.com reservation while staying at the hotel and let me know how it goes.

I travel quite a bit with my job. I haven't used Expedia or Trip Advisor in 15 years. And it's not because they aren't bumped to the top of Google.

Even Bing searches? Oh, you meant they use their product to promote another one of their products. How dare they?
